While compiling the Links List, I've had to email countless women artists to
ask what the heck their names are. I couldn't find any hint of a name on their websites -- or maybe just a first name hidden away somewhere. This is why I'm so aware of the problem. (You can't imagine how many women do this. All ages, every beading discipline, from lampworkers to beadweavers.....) I realize why we do it.....having been a feminist for 31 years now (as you noted, Kalera). I just get arrgh about it. Like I want to grab them and give them a pencil and say, "Write your name. Then say it. Out loud. Now, repeat." Sigh. Men are raised to be proud of their accomplishments, and they're taught to promote themselves. That's one of the main reasons they make more money than women. Women, *especially* women of her generation (guessing from the "Grammy" part of her business name) were taught to be humble about their accomplishments, and to downplay themselves. (I know I don't need to tell you this... you know!) Women of MY generation were raised by enlightened women of her generation who had learned that the role they'd been raised in was bullsh*t, and did their best to teach us to take pride in our accomplishments... but we still have a hard time, because our mothers could *tell* us to be proud and to promote ourselves, but they still, unconsciously, were living the old way and could not *show* us. We all need to try consciously to display these skills. Some women (Tink!) are really good at it, and set a good example for the rest of us. -- -Kalera ~~ Sooz ------- ESBC ~ Dr. Sooz's Bead Links http://airandearth.netfirms.com/soozlinkslist.html ~ Bead Notes: Beading information A - Z http://www.lampwork.net/beadnotes.html |

Thank you, Kalera... It's a constant battle with myself though. Even my
recent experience of having folks point out to me that they didn't like the stuff on my auctions where I wrote about myself in the third person. It was very difficult to say what I said in the first person, even though I believe it. -- Tinkster www.imeltstuff.com NEW eBay Sto http://www.stores.ebay.com/blackswampglassworks Join my Mailing List: "Kalera Stratton" wrote in message ... And this is why I don't want to be Alaskan Artistry or Northern Lights
Shinies. I am me (Peterson) and this is my work. I'll provide information, but adjectives, which are likely to be subjective any how, are up to the consumer. Also (partly due to Depression) I forget what business name goes with which person and which personality. It makes it even worse to have seller IDs that are again different. I want to see you name and your claims. I want you to say "I did this work". Some auctions say, these beads are hand made and annealed. And I'll think, Oh yeah? By whom? How do you know? So, state your name, so I can see you stand behind your work and your claims. Tina "Dr. Sooz" wrote in message ... Why don't a lot of female artists mention their NAME on their website? MEN
ALWAYS DO. I think it might have something to do with the fact that men aren't often stalked by people who visit their websites, and women are being constantly counseled about trying to remain anonymous on the web because of all the "weirdos" out there. It sucks. I say this with all good-naturedness, okay?-- but I'm also serious. I am just so tired of it. Who ARE you? *What* are you? You're an artist. Why the heck are you anonymous? "Anonymous" -- in the world's quotations -- was a woman. We got no credit for the things we said and did for eons. It upsets me that women are still perpetrating this. It saddens me. I want them to stop -- the stuff men do to women in business is bad enough without our complicity. ~~ Sooz ------- ESBC ~ Dr. Sooz's Bead Links http://airandearth.netfirms.com/soozlinkslist.html ~ Bead Notes: Beading information A - Z http://www.lampwork.net/beadnotes.html |

I thought of that too (before I posted my original question). I mean, I have
had stalkers. It's a serious concern. But the more out there you are, the safer you can be, conversely -- because of being so visible. We can't hide in the house forever. I too have been stalked. It's one reason why I keep a P O Box. Which I can
then give out quite freely. I agree that being visible does not encourage stalkers, and might discourage them. Being out there shows confidence. And fear is one of the greatest tools of stalkers. Abusers in general isolate their victims first of all. Tina "Dr. Sooz" wrote in message ... I thought of that too (before I posted my original question). I mean, I have had stalkers. That's what I think it is. Did you ever notice it's generally men who commit
hideous sexual assault and child molestation? I think as women, we think about safety first and anonymity feels like a good cloak. "Carol in SLC" wrote in message ...
