Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know--until last year, I had been living a few miles
from Sooz for 9 years
It's more shocking to me that I could buy a house here for that amount than
the fact that it would only remodel a closet in NoCali! LOL!

F*CK! I could buy a 4 bedrom house here for $20,000!

Welcome to the world, girl! Here, in Sunny So Cal, it would take that to
remodel a bathroom! LOL...

and Sooz?..she's up in "bogglesthemindhowexpensiverealestateis" land!

(but,
according to my dh who's a financial planner, and his real estate

friends...the
market has topped, and we're headed for a "correction"!)

Haven't they been saying that for the last 5 years?

Haven't they been saying that for the last 5 years?

They've been predicting it, but now it's becoming real. There are now some
"buyer incentives" popping up, and homes that would have had 5 offers, all at
above the sale price, are sitting unsold for weeks...

The real estate agents are starting to sweat, as are the mortgage
folks...knowing it could be just a 'correction', tho, some sellers are still
thinking "ack!..let's get this pig on the market NOW"!...

Economics...fascinating...(sometimes)!

I know what you mean. My dh has a biz acquantaince that just bought an "income
property" in Kentucky. The MAYOR of the town met with him and his wife, and
the local vendors are bending over backwards to help them clean up this
property to get it rented...it's amazing. And the investment the man made is
considered somewhat chump change (as in Sooz's "relativity" theory of money).

Real Estate in my area would send a die hard Cali resident to their
knees--lemme grab my local paper and share an ad or two with you guys.

"Three bedroom home on two acres.....Washer /dryer hookup, stove and refri,
two outbuildings. $22,000"
"Recently Remodeled...Brick and Vinyl, one bath, lg backyard w/chain link
fence, carport w/storage, utility room, hardwood floors. Great Starter
Home. $65,000"
"New House for sale, 2400 sq ft, 3/4 bdrms, lg bonus room,3 baths, hardwood
flooring, custom cabiners, jacuzzi tub. $169,000"
"2600 sq ft with partial finished basement, 4 bdrm, 4 bath, vaulted
ceilings, tile and wood floors, screended porch, 7yrs old with nice shady
lot. $189,000"

See what I mean? And these are higher than what we normally see around
here.

Yeah, but...they are "there". Pack one up and move it out here, and I'd
consider it! Price ain't everything!

*sigh* If I could pack one up and move it out there, do you really think
I'd let anyone else have it? lol!

Well said, and exactly what I was thinking.

I remember a time when I *swore* I would never spend more than ten bucks
for a pair of jeans. At the time, my take-home pay, for 40 hours a
week, was 66 bucks. Now, although I try not to do it very often g, it
doesn't seem weird to me to pay 30-40 dollars for jeans.

Hobby money for me might be fifty bucks a month (heh), but for someone
else, maybe it's ten times that.

Cheers,
Carla

I think that money is a sliding scale thing. $1000 would be a teensy drop in
the bucket to me if our household income were ten times what it now is. It
would be one big shrug.

$1000 is *nothing* to pay for a pair of shoes, for instance, to some women.
(To use an item we've been talking about in other threads....SHOES.) They
*collect* Manolos. Some women think nothing of spending $20,000 for a DRESS.
So, maybe the buyer of Corina's set of beads -- and her bidding-war partner
there -- have lots of money. Simply put.

It's all relative. (And I no longer think it's insane.)

Where is that? India?

$20K won't even add a room to an existing house, here. And may not even be
enough to remodel the kitchen.
