Default Scroll Frame Question

Jacquard_The_Ripper opined thusly:

Hi the

I have a 16" scroll frame and an upcoming project that's 16.5 W X 9 L.
Can I put it in the frame sideways with the sides rolled up instead of
the top and bottom and just hold the frame sideways to work? Or do I
need a larger scroll frame?

Cynthia

I'd just put it on sideways and work it that way.

Regards,

FRED -- when you gonna design a FANTASTIC StitchAway Fabric Mount for this
type of design? A regular one just won't work if it's turned on its side!
don't ask me why -- just trust MOI -- LOL!
Moving on -- the model piece I just finished for Stitcher's World magazine
was shaped like that -- verrrrry wide and really short. I put it in my scroll
frame and stitched with the design upright and the scroll frame turned on its
side. It was a bit strange to say the least but it was do-able.
What made this even worse is that I had taken the piece on holiday with me.
I couldn't use Skyhook's SUPERB String Stand and had to stitch with a pillow or
something propping up the frame! Talk about a P.I.T.A.! I had forgotten how
difficult that was since I put all of my stuff in my Grip-It!!!
The first piece I did for Poetta at Ladybug Lane was also shaped like this
-- short and wide. I put that one in the frame and stitched it sideways. I
kept the frame upright and turned the chart on its side. I won't do that again
-- it's too hard to remember to make my cross stitches differently!!!!! I
ended up frogging stuff way too often because I would go back to doing my
stitches the "regular" way -- LOL! CiaoMeow ^;;^

I did TW's Angel Procession by putting it sideways on the scroll bars. When
I was done, I was very displeased with the end result. I really like a LOT
of tension on my scroll bars and tend to stitch with a lot of stitch
tension. The end result was that when it came off the scroll bars the
finished piece was distorted and my VDW Karen with all her infinite patience
could not get it to iron out nice and even. The framer even had a lot of
problems and it is noticeable -- the top and bottom frames of the picture
are not even.

I would suggest obtaining some longer scroll bars or making some yourself as
one of the other posters suggested. I have store bought scroll bars in all
sizes from 12" length up to 26" length and gave made a couple of my own that
are longer yet.

I did just what you suggest when I was working a long narrow band that was to
go around the inside of a sewing basket. It worked fine for me, but slower
than usual. First I had to make sure my side-ways stitches would look like my
regular stitches done on upright fabric. As I remember I had to change my
stitching pattern. Also, at first the pattern was hard to follow, but I worked
through that. I would do it again, if I had to, but just think spending about
spending more time on it. Boo

I have a friend who prefers to work this way all the time. So if it's
comfortable and you are happy with the way things look, you can do
whatever you like! What are you starting on? Nosy, Paula B.
