Board cutters
What would y'all recommend for cutting utensils to get backing boards to right
size? Foam board is too thick for the scissors I've got on hand; ditto for the adhesive boards. My el cheapo exacto knive can score a straight line but it doesn't go all the way through. HELP!! -- another Anne, add ingers to frugalf to reply |

My el cheapo exacto knive can score a straight line but it doesn't go all the way through. I use a razor knife with an adjustable, snap off blade (Olfa makes one, as does just about every one else). The ones I've got in the kitchen came from the dollar store--3 to a pack. You shouldn't try to make the cut in one pass, anyway (you have to press too hard on the knife to make the cut in one pass, and that makes it a lot easier to go off track) . I usually take three passes to cut foam core. You could probably use the exacto, if you make more than one pass. Score it on one side, cut again on the same line to cut deeper, flip the board over and cut on the same line again. You *might* have to make a fourth pass, depending on how long the blade is and how thick your foamcore is. jenn -- Jenn Ridley WIP: Art Stitch Rose Trio, Emperor's Coat, FrankenFlora, Halloween Circle Most recently Finished: Santa Christmas Stocking, Will Work for Freezer Space, Turnberry Ridge |

I use a box cutter/utility knife. Mine has no brand name printed on it
but I know it cost about six dollars. The handle is about six inches long and one inch thick. The blade fully retracts into the handle and can be extended and locked at various increments. There is a screw in the middle of the device so it can be disassembled for blade replacement. I am thinking of getting a second to use only for foam core so I don't have to worry about the blade being fouled with adhesive from opening boxes. I usually take three passes so I don't compress the foamcore any more than necessary. anne wrote: What would y'all recommend for cutting utensils to get backing boards to right size?
