Dunno what you'd call 'good quality', but I get a lot of stuff from Pioneer Gem (www.pioneergem.com) and Black Star Trading (www.blackstartrading.com) Pioneer has a regular catalog and usually runs specials on cabs in bulk. Black Star has (or used to have) a lot of off-size cabs they had gotten from jewelry manufacturers that they sold at very good prices. Since I make my own settings, I like deals like that a lot. --RC |

Browsed Pioneergem's site. I randomly picked several cabs to check
prices and was surprised to see that these are 20%-50% higher than the prices in professional stores in Israel (Tel-Aviv). Pros get additional 10-40% discount. Do Pioneer's prices represent the average USA prices? I know it is almost impossible to compare gemstones prices, but they don't claim to offer "best quality" and the gems I buy locally are high quality. Pity that the pro stores in Tel-Aviv don't have web sites.... Can't specifically comment on the actual question, but keep in mind that many cab materials are African or from other sources than the USA, that many of the cabs we buy are cut in the far east or otherwise also out of the U.S.A. Add these factors to the current low rate of the dollar relative to other world currencies, and perhaps that is all that's needed to account for the price differences in the U.S... ? Imported stuff other than from China (which artificially tracks it's currency to the dollar) is rather more pricey here, right now. The price of gold is one good example. It's world price isn't so high, but priced in dollars, precious metals are up there simply because the dollar is down... I suspect the gem market may be similarly affected. Peter |
