I agree with Karen, there is plenty of quilting without meandering around
the cables. I think it would be too much, as a matter of fact.
Lisa.....totally not pulling your leg :-)

I have until 10/8 to finish this wedding quilt for my Hunky Mr.
Collins' daughter and FDSIL and get it in the mail. My "crying in my
beer"- even tho I don't drink alcohol of any type- is that after I got
a bunch of the heart blocks meander quilted I realized that I'm going
to have to meander quilt around the quilted cables to keep the quilting
balanced without puffy areas and to make it lay flat. That just
tripled the amount of quilting I need to do and the time it will take
to complete it.

Will anybody tell me it will be okay to *not* meander around the
cables??? Are you saying that just to be nice??? LOL

Well according to these pictures, Leslie, I can not for the life of me see
why you need to meander in the cable quilted areas. No, I'm not just saying
that. If I were I would just say - nothing. LOL

Where are the puffy areas? I don't see any puffy areas, and I'm *not*
saying that just to be nice!

First, I don't see puffy areas in the quilt. But that can be hard to see in
pictures, so here's what I'd do.

Do all the quilting you were originally planning to do. Lay the quilt out on
a flat surface, and take a long, hard look at it. Don't think about
deadlines, don't think about the extra work. Just ask yourself if you are
going to be happy with the quilting when you see this quilt again in a few
years. If you can't answer that yes, you need to take a deep breath and do
more quilting. If you *do* answer yes, you're done -- yee haw!

I think it looks beautiful! No need for meandering around the cables.

I thank all of you for the honest answers and support. Part of the
trouble is that this top is a 12-15 y.o. UFO. I put it aside many
years ago because it didn't appeal to me after I got it nearly
finished. My Hunky Mr. Collins saw it and thought it would be perfect
for his daughter. I think a lot of the problem is that I don't really
care for the pattern and colors and fabrics. My tastes are much
different now.... more into landscapes and batiks and hand-dyes and
artsy type quilting projects-- possibly more sophisticated??? That is
making me more indecisive and critical than I might be otherwise- plus
I want it to be nice... and special for my sweet step-daughter.

Thanks again!

I very much agree with Kathy - sound advice.
However, if you do decide the cabled sections need more quilting, I
don't think it need be more meandering. I think another 'row' of
quilting on either side of the cables - like echo quilting, at the same
distance from the existing cables as the distance between the existing
pairs of lines in the cables - would hold down any puffiness if it
happens; and would not look like an afterthought. Mind you, meandering
wouldn't either, but that would take longer. Echo quilting would
require no marking, as you could use the walking foot and the width of
the foot.

Oh Pat! Absolutely brilliant idea! I am so much more comfortable
with my walking foot, too, than free motioning. Less tension in the
arms and shoulders for me to quilt that way. How I love this ng and
all the clever quilters posting here who are always ready to help and
share and console and advise and.......! ;-)))))

Now now Leslie ... don't spoil your beer ;-)
From what I can see in the pictures there should be no need for any
extra quilting around the cables. But you have to do what you are happy
with. To paraphrase Pogo, "We have met the Quilt Police and they are us."
