Can you explain to MOI just *what* intarsial knitting is? I've seen it in catalogues describing sweaters but don't really have any idea what it is. I know I can look it up in the dictionary but it's much more fun to find out here :-). I have a *very* old kit I bought from Herrschners for a kid sweater with a kitty on the front. I bought the knitting kit just so I could have the cat design -- LOL. Of course, it was on sale so I paid about $10 for it and I did get a bunch of acrylic yarn, too. I'm hoping that I will be able to knit myself the sweater with that design even tho' it might be a small design. I'd be happy with a big rectangle for the front, the back and the arms. Putting the pieces together is no problem either. Now that I have gotten my feet wet, I should be able to get that sweater done AND the crochet afghan made up or blocks with a kitty in the center of each one :-). We were each given a postcard and told to pick 20 yarns and knit it, if 20 was not enough to pick 20 more. The yarns were all heaped on a sheet on the floor. My postcard was a picture of a Japanese garden. We were taught how to weave the ends in of each colour. There is a sample of the work I did on my web site under Other Crafts. addy in sig.line It was my first attempt so no way perfect. Hugs Shirley -- Shirley Shone www.allcrafts.org.uk |

I'm Knitting!!!!
OY -- I think I will just stick to plain old knitting and purling
with one colour per row for the time being :-). Thanks for the info Joy, I'm not sure I will ever get to the point of being able to knit like you describe. Then again, twenty years ago I never thought I would be stitching on 40 ct. even weave or doing Hardanger! CiaoMeow ^;;^ Joy Beeson wrote: Short answer: intarsia is patchwork. You change yarns at intervals to knit patches of colors. There are various tricks to avoid knitting separate pieces of fabric -- one is to make all design lines diagonal, so that simply dropping one yarn and picking up another does the trick. [answering other posts in the thread] Fair Isle is one style of stranded knitting. Stranded knitting is sometimes called "double knitting" because the strands running behind the stitches make the fabric almost twice as thick -- I sometimes strand two ends of the same yarn to make thick heels for socks -- but I avoid saying "double knitting" because it also means many other things. In stranded knitting, unused colors are stranded behind the stitches. This makes it advisable to use only two colors per row, and to avoid having more than three consecutive stitches of the same color. If you can control yarn with either hand, stranding with one yarn in each hand feels faster than plain knitting. (But label the balls "left" and "right" and never, never switch -- it's worse than mixed directions in cross stitch.) There is also "woven knitting" in which a yarn is caught behind the stitches by knitting one stitch over the woven yarn and the next under the woven yarn. When the weaving on each row is offset one stitch from the row below, weaving makes a pretty honeycomb effect on the purl side. The weaving yarn can be swapped with the knitting yarn to make the same patterns you might work in intarsia. It isn't advisable to try to weave patterns meant for stranding because frequent yarn swaps make weaving untidy, but weaving is a good way to pad solid-color rows in stranded patterns. I'm Knitting!!!!
First of all, Congrats, TM! Welcome back to the knitting world.
There are *so* many fun yarns out there! Do you "pick" or "throw" your yarn? I knit just like I crochet...iow, I "pick" and I think it goes much faster than throwing. On Feb 22, 9:03*am, Tia Mary wrote: * * Can you explain to MOI just *what* intarsial knitting is? *I've seen it in catalogues describing sweaters but don't really have any idea what it is. *I know I can look it up in the dictionary but it's much more fun to find out here :-). And Jenn answered: Colorwork. Blocks of one color in a field of another. Flowers, cats, aliens, hearts, vertical stripes, etc. Not quite Fair Isle -- which, iirc, is only two colors per row, almost always geometric, and the color not being used to knit with is carried across the back of the work. In intarsia, each instance of a color has its own bobbin/butterfly/ball of yarn, and you need to twist the yarn when you change colors or you'll get holes in your knitting. Huh. How 'bout that! I've done both types and never knew there was a name for them! Great explanation, btw, Jenn! Back in the 70s I knit 4 or 5 bulky sweaters from Herrschners that had pics on them...Star Wars' X-wing fighter for my nephew, a horse (Appaloosa, of course!) for me, a pheasant for DH and a camping scene (THE worst...had about 18 balls dangling from the back of that one!) for my dad. Oh, and a fawn for DS, who never got to wear it cuz I was going to line it and never did. Now I can give it to my DGD when she gets old enough! * * I have a *very* old kit I bought from Herrschners for a kid sweater with a kitty on the front. *I bought the knitting kit just so I could have the cat design -- LOL. Now, *that* is a shocker!!! You can make it for Raechel! I have a baby afghan pattern from back in the late 70s that is done in blocks of fillet using dbl crochet and blocks of afghan stitch, on which you cs different animals. I was going to use a soft yellow boucle (Pound of love) but, after trying out a swatch, I don't think I'll be able to see the individual stitches well enough to do the cs on it. Oh, gee, darn...I'll have to have more s.e.x.!!! lol Joan |

I'm Knitting!!!!
Well, I'll be a suck egg mule!!!! WHAT is picking or throwing? All
I know is I knit with the skein in front of MOI and the yarn in my right hand, held up along the knitting needle. Also, I never even thought about making the sweater for "R" -- likely 'cuz she's in Lizard Land and only wears sweaters or jackets for a few months out of the year. Regardless -- she would LOVE to have a sweater that GrandMother made for her with a kitty on it :-). I'll get to use up the cheap yarn, she'll grow out of it before the yarn self destructs and I'll STILL have the pattern for the kitty :-). I was in Wally World the other day and bought 5 skeins (all they had) of a variegated purple, yellow, green yarn -- looks just like pansy colors which I adore :-). I want to knit a blankie for the family room and have decided it will be very simple, just alternating 10 stitch blocks of knit & purl. I saw this done for a baby quilt and I like the look plus it has no open parts where kitty hands can get inside!!! Anywhoooo -- Juliette, my friend I am taking the knitting class with, said I would likely need another 5 skeins if I want a decent sized afghan so I went to two other WW and found another 7 skeins (more is at Michael's, too) plus some coordinating solid colors. I now have a total of 12 skeins of variegated yarn and 2 skeins each of purple, green & yellow. I should be able to make a really nice, BIG afghan with 18 skeins of yarn I should think -- LOLOL! The solid colors are the bigger skeins, too. I think I will knit long panels and then join them until I get something I think is wide enough. I have to have about 70" of width in order to get myself and the chair covered so that the kitties can come sit with MOI -- LOL! I'll make it that long too so that I don't have any parts exposed to the chilly air. This is one project I really do need to work on. The HUGE bag with the yarn in it is going to get DH suspicious -- LOLOL! Thank heavens it isn't really $$$$ yarn. I am almost finished with the pretty, lacy looking scarf I am making for MOI so I should get back to it. My last class is tomorrow and I want to have it finished. The verses at the end of Sheena's link don't have anything about St. Chris either, and I am sure he figures in to a verse. CiaoMeow ^;;^ I think what Joan was referring to was the difference between European/Continental style knitting and English knitting. European is where you hold the yarn in your left hand, behind the work (put in front for a purl stitch) and grab it with the right needle and pull it through as though you were using a crochet hook. English is where you hold the yarn in front of the work and using your right hand put the yarn around the needle and pull it through. The stitches look exactly the same. It's just a difference in method. I'm sure there are clearer, better explanations for the two styles, but that's the way I always thought of it. Continental is usually faster.
