Please help! - Satin Stitching

I'm making a fabric bowl, and my first bowl came out great, this one
I'm using varigated thread, and it keeps not 'picking up' the stitch, I
can't come up with any other way to explain it. It's ruining my bowl,
and my patience!

Do you have any ideas why this is happening? I've tried on test fabric
andit doesn't seem to be a problem...

Have you tried changing the needle! Sometimes thats all it takes! Estelle

I've found my YLI varigated quilting thread is thicker than standard
cotton thread, and the satin stitch on the bowls went better with a size
90 jeans or quilting needle...

I'll try that. I've re-threaded the machine, the bobbin, and messed
around with the tension, but I haven't tried a differeny needle yet...

I also found with some of the steeper sided bowls that I got a better
result if I did a slightly narrower zigzag as a first pass and then a
satin in a wider stitch as a second pass. Just another idea...

Interesting. ... I only had a serious problem with one side of the
bowl, and I did start that side with a wider zig zag than the others..
I re-cut it , but it never really recovered...

i had been thinking about making bowls as christmas gifts, but knw I'm
nervous...

any other advice?

I have made a few bowls and I found that Rayon Embroidery thread worked the
best for me. I bought a big spool at the quilt show for just $5, just for
practice, but it works the best. I also use a smaller zigzag on the first
pass and a bit wider on the second. JMHO, Linda

Sounds like your needle is dirty or gummed up.

I had problems on my fabric boxes last year too. I ended up settling
for a zig zag stitch that was wider than it should be. I recently
bought a new machine and chalked it up to the old machine needing
servicing (which it got right after I made the boxes). Sometimes it
worked perfectly and then I'd try to do a piece and it just would not
fix itself no matter what I tried. I'm not sure how you can fix it,
but I can advise you with certainty that: swearing, screaming, ranting,
cajoling, and threatening do NOT solve the problem... I tested those
methods.

It could be a problem with the bonding agent used to fix the fabric and the
stiffener. This could be "gunking up" your needle. I'm not sure what you
could do except try another iron-on agent and see if it helps. Or just try
wiping the needle regularly and checking that the eye is not being "filled".
