Default smaller mandrels, anyone?

I have a small kiln and need some mandrels which are only about 6
inches long. Does anyone cut and finish (ground down the ends)their own
mandrels and sell these? The only place I know which has the smaller
ones has a large minimum order. I need about a dozen or two.

Thanks,
Patti

Patti,

I generally make my own mandrels. I buy my supplies at the local
welding store and cut the mandrels to the size I want. With 1/16 I
usually cut at 12" and then the 3/32 around 9". I cut the smaller ones
longer because they sometimes get wonky and I can cut them back. They
cut very easy with a regular wire cutter out of my husband's tool box.

Hi Patti.

Do you use a holder for them? Maybe the places that sell the holders sell
the smaller mandrels? My fingers would burn off working that close! I know
a lot of people buy their own welding rods and do it themselves for whatever
size they need....but I'm not one of them.

Hey Patti

If you contact me off group at denise(at)jglassbeadz.com you can mail
me the longer mandrels and I will cut them down for you with my Taurus
Band Saw - I use it for all of my mandrels and it cuts the steel like
butter.

I do fused glass so I don't work with open flame. I'll have to check
into whether or not there's a welding place near here. I need the
mandrels so I can do some beads and sandblast them, it's easier to
sandblast when you have a mandrel "handle". Otherwise, I just use fiber
paper to make a channel in the bead/pendants.

Patti, I've been wondering what to do with all my slightly-bent
mandrels... I can cut them in half and send them to you! I've used them
to make fused beads, but a girl only needs so many, as you know! Can you
use 3/32" and 1/16", or do you prefer one over the other?
