Default Newbie knitter: question about pattern

Greetings...

Beginning knitter here. I've been playing with scarf patterns using the
inexpensive Red Heart yarns. Now I'm trying to stretch just a smidge.
I'm having trouble understanding a free pattern I got off of Bernat.com. I
really want to understand the whole process before beginning, so I've only
gotten as far as purchasing the yarn and doing a guage test. It's their Boa
yarn and pretty darn fun to play with. It called out my name, I had to buy
it.
Here's the pattern as I've retyped it out:

Keyhole Scarf
Cast on 22 sts. Knit 4 rows.
NEXT ROW: (WS) K3. Purl to last 3 sts. K3
NEXT ROW: Knit
Rep last 2 rows until work from beg measures 5 ins, ending with RS facing
for next row.
DIVIDE FOR OPENING
NEXT ROW: K11. TURN
NEXT ROW: K1. P7. K3
Rep last 2 rows until opening measures 1 inch, ending with WS facing for
next row.
Break yarn.
(***here's where I get confused***)
With RS of work facing, rejoin yarn to rem 11 sts and proceed as follows:
NEXT ROW: Knit
NEXT ROW: K3. P7. K1.
Rep last 2 rows until opening meansures 1 inch, ending with WS facing for
next row.
JOINING ROW: (K3. P8) across first side of scarf. (P8. K3) across second
side of scarf.
Cont even, having 3 sts at each sie in garter st until work from beg
measures 22 ins, ending with WS facing for next row.
Knit 4 rows. Cast off knitways

Okay, right there where it says "break yarn": What do I do with the tail of
yarn that I've cut??
Where it says "rejoin yarn": How do I join the yarn to the existing stiches?
Just tie a knot onto the row below?
They claimed this pattern was "easy". Help please!! And thanx!!

Weave it in LATER, just leave it hang for now.

Where it says "rejoin yarn": How do I join the yarn to the existing stiches?
Just tie a knot onto the row below?

No, you've turned the work, remember? You start knitting with 'new' yarn.

I'm sorry if I'm not very clear, I've done patterns LIKE this for years,
and it just comes automatically without thinking, and trying to describe it
(for me) is difficult.
Hopefully, someone like Sonya will come in and clear it up.

They claimed this pattern was "easy". Help please!! And thanx!!

You're welcome!

Okay, but I don't have to worry about it unravelling later??
How much of a tail would you suggest leaving to weave in later?

stiches?

No, you've turned the work, remember? You start knitting with 'new' yarn.

Yes yes, with new yarn. But how do I connect that new yarn to my current
work? Just like above, weave it in later?

See, I'm used to ending a row with one yarn, cutting it, then tieing a knot
with the new yarn to the tail of the old yarn. Then weaving in the two
tails after finishing. Is this whole tieing a knot thing not needed? Did I
mention I'm a newbie???? :-}

Welcome to the group, lal!
Good that Noreen could explain this. I am not the best "explainer" in
english!
I am sure you will get the help you need!
You'll soon enjoy the knitting, and be able to give advise to others ;-))

Hi LAL,
No, you'll be weaving in both ends, the one you broke off, AND
the new one you started with. I like to leave a 6 inch tail, and
I weave in until it FEELS secure.
No, it won't unravel, hon!
HTH,
Noreen
who hopes someone who is better with words (SONYA?) will jump in
here...

Okay, I feel much more secure now. I will go home and do this and it will
all work out just fine!!

Many thanks for the infusion of confidence.

Yes -- it should work out fine. Tell us how you like it when you finish. I
looked at some of that yarn today but reminded myself of my bulging stash and
let it stay in the store. I am interested in knowing how it is to work with and
how well you like the finished scarf.
