OT Take Shelter!
You won't believe what I've done. I don't believe what I've done. I don't
even know what I've done. Our telephone area has just gone to this tedious system where we have to dial 10 digits to even call next door. Well, not exactly. Some of us but not all of us, and we were not one of the 10 digit victims. I kept getting a busy signal when I tried to connect to my email and you all. So. (Here's the scary part.) I decided I would give changing the phone number that this computer calls when I dial-in. Dial-up? whatever I did. And even added an alternate. I have no idea if I also inadvertently launched a few anti-missile rockets and detonated explosives down at the old hotel they were about to dynamite. It is very quiet outside and there are no flame-shooting, red light blinking things circling overhead so maybe all is well. But, if you have a bomb shelter, now might be a good time to hide. Take the QIs and stash with you. Polly |

We have had 10 digit dialing around here for several years. No one
wanted to split our area code, so they overlaid another one on top of it about a year later. 703 and 571 are local calls, anything else needs a "1" in front to make a long distance call. Any yes, we DO have to dial 10 digits to call next door. Kim |

Take the QIs and stash with you. Polly I was sad when out exchange was updated... We went over to new six figure numbers for local dialing (rather than 3!). On the old exchange, if I rang up during or just following heavy rain or wind, there was no telling what would happen. I rang my mum (in Hertfordshire - less than 100 miles away!) and regularly got all sorts of places, like New South Wales, Quebec, Somewhere in Argentina, County Cork in Ireland... An exciting lottery! And I got to talk to all these people at no cost, because BT had to cancel the fee as they had misconnected me! I also used to get interesting crossed lines with multi-lingual conversations, strange noises like aliens were invading the sewers (which we don't have up here, being on cesspool drainage!), and all sorts of interesting stuff! Howdy!
Just got this note from Patagonia: "Tell Polly to Knock it OFF!! She's already disabled the microwave oven and short-wave radio!" Well Miss Polly, things may be quiet in the Swamp,
but we've had some strange occurrences here in the Tidewater!! Weird weather, changing form hour to hour. No sun to speak of either. Even a few snow flurries on March 17th ... can you believe it? Thanks a heap! PAT, disgruntled in VA/USA Polly Esther wrote: You won't believe what I've done. I don't believe what I've done. I don't even know what I've done. Oh, the needless pain we bear. The new number I set is for a location not
even 5 miles from here - which, of course, doesn't mean anything. I guess tomorrow, I'll bite the bullet and call my phone company and attempt to find out if the new number is long distance. I probably, after only 5 or 7 hours of "your call is important to us" get a droid somewhere in China who only speaks Portuguese.
