For those of you who use PCs, not MACS, do not, I repeat do not, upgrade
to Windows Vista or buy a new machine with Vista installed unless you
are willing to spend more money to buy new programs that allegedly run
on Vista or to spend hours and hours figuring out how to make old
programs and peripherals (i.e., printers and scanners) work with Vista.

More later if you want details... I need a drink!!!

Oh Ann, thanks for the heads-up. I can almost
feel your frustration. I'll have a drink for you.

Save your time for stitching and the money for stash. What I have heard so
far, Microsoft should reimburse those who bought it and take it back. Must
be such an absolute nightmare.

Lol, make it two drinks from what I have heard. More people on my
local group have reverted to XP in disgust. I know there were XP
detractors but I have found it very, very stable. Have never had to
reformat, do not get wobblies etc. I think with the disastrous 2000
and ME behind them, they finally got it right with XP and am not sure
why they feel we need Vista.

I just know they will have to drag XP from my cold, dead hands lol

The head of our neighborhood computer club, along with several engineers
that are members, all said Vista isn't worth the trouble. Programs wont
work and they can't find any wonderful innovations that they can't live
without.

They all said to stick with XP if you can.

But, and it's a big but, I was thinking about a laptop and when I asked in
Staples what they had, they had zero with XP. Every single computer in the
store was preloaded with Vista.

Do you have the disks for your current XP ? If it was for my lap top

That's a sure way to make MS keep XP going if enough people start
doing that, and it sounds like they might.

That probably won't work. XP remembers the computer architecture it was
licensed for and if it is reinstalled, requires authorization from MS to
reactivate the license.

If you reinstall because you changed something about your architecture,
they'll reactive the license.

(I know this because I reformat my hard drives once a year.)

If you attempt to put it on a different computer, they won't and XP will
just stop working.

Your best alternative with a laptop is to just go ahead and buy a fresh
OEM copy of XP from your friendly neighborhood geek store or online,
which will set you back a goodly extra sum.

I make it a habit never EVER to buy anything from Microsoft that is
still in its infancy. Frankly, it's just a rule for most geeks and geek
wannabes.

I didn't get XP until Service Pack 2 came out. I'm still running Office
2000. I don't use Internet Explorer or Outlook at all.

XP had this very same issue when it was introduced, what with programs
not running on it. It turned my husband's scanner into a giant
paperweight because it wasn't supported and the company had no intention
of supporting it.

If I didn't have to have some programs that work only on Windows for my
day job AND for my designing, I'd be on Linux in a flash. Even at that,
I'd still be torn between that and getting a Mac, as I'm a Mac girl at
heart.

And I didn't "fix" my XP to SP2 until this week when I needed to install
the patch for DST. I trust my other-vendor antivirus, firewall, and
spyware protection so never had any problems with the "holes" in SP1.
And even wanting the DST patch, I was still reluctant to mess around
installing all those blasted MS "fixes". Luckily, no problems so far
other than the audio on here is now unreasonably loud and I can't figure
out why (have the volume slider about as low as it can go and it is
still louder than I want).

Brenda-
I thought I was the last hold-out! I haven't upgraded to SP2 yet- I
know I'll have issues with my scanner for one thing.
I've been waiting to get my taxes efiled before I "screw" the whole
thing up with the upgrade. I tried to do it over a year ago, and my
system got so flaky I had to buy a new harddrive & start over with
SP1. I hope all goes well with you.
