Waaay OT; Muslim cartoons.
Well , since several countries in Europe now deal with this so called
cartoons. and several called their citizens back from Gaza, and from several Arab Muslim Countries as people were threatening them, because of they feel insulted ,, we all shall see how it developes. Freedom of speech includes freedom of worship, and we all are educated to respect the feelings of other Beliefs ,,, Just like you i find Hunger poverty very offensive, And i try to help in this matters we have too many poor people, many societies collect food and ditribute it to the poor amongst us. This doesn`t excuse insulting religious feelings of people. mirjam |

Waaay OT; Muslim cartoons.
Sarah ,
I am going to answer this from several points of view Jewish people have been portrayed for many generations in stereotypes that enhancedAnti-Semitism, and hatred towards Jews. thus i am very sensitive to that sort of `so called` carricatures`, i find it racial incitement. I have never seen here or elsewhere Anti-Christian so called carricatures, But had i seen any i would have protested just as much as i protest now against Ant Anti Muslim Carricatures. My English Family members are extremly sensitive about any remarks about their cooking abilities. My Dutch relatives hate it when somebody hints about them being miser etc,,, we could go on and fimd some Doft spot in any group , But i think [feel and hear ] that Insulting Holy names is the worst for many people , so why do it ??? Freedom of Speech doesn`t give Free season to insult all . mirjam The uproar has made me very curious too. I wanted to know why the Muslim community is so upset about some cartoons. The link: http://www.di2.nu/files/Muhammed_Car...ds_Posten.html is to the cartoons in question. While I do not agree with the content of the cartoons, and I feel they are very derogatory towards Muslim, I understand that the artists were expressing their opinions and impressions of the faith. I will even go so far as to say I can understand where those misconceptions may stem from. The media seems focused on showing the majority of images of Islam (at least here in the American Midwest) as a violent, terrorist faith. I know this is an incorrect portrayal, because I've met many faithful Muslims that are peaceful people. I think it was in poor taste for the papers to run the cartoons, but I'm very conservative when it comes to mocking other religions. At the same time, I don't think that the "Palestinian gunmen [who] jumped on the outer wall of a European Union office in Gaza City on Thursday and demanded an apology. Masked gunmen also briefly took over an EU office in Gaza on Monday." were necessarily helping to set-straight any misconceptions about their religion that the cartoons may have caused. |

I never said that I approve of insulting the holy names of other
religions. I'm willing to hope that at least one of the artists didn't know it's against the beliefs of Islam to create an image of the founder. They might not have known that the way they chose to express their opinions would be twice as insulting than it would have been had they left Mohammed out of it. What is holy to one person may not be (and usually isn't) holy to another. I agree that freedom of speach should not be wasted on insulting each other, but freedom of speech does allow us to have and express our own opinions. |

How would you feel id somebody took some of precious to you Xst pictures and threw mud and chlorine over them ???? mirjam We have a TV program called "The Royal Canadian Air Farce", which is a half hour program produced every week. These sort of things, and many more are routinely used on the show, and it can be absolutely hilariously funny. ***NOTHING*** is sacred to the Air Farce. So to answer your question, what you are suggesting happens routinely in Canada, and we find it amusing and entertaining. The Air Farce is not the only show by any means. We also have "The Rick Mercer Report", "This Hour Has 22 Minutes", and on radio, "Definitely Not the Opera". I am sure there are many more. In the UK, there was "Spitting Image". |

I knew it wasn't approved of, but didn't realize until recently, when
watching a PBS show about Morocco (I think,) that I realized it was a tenet of faith. I've always loved the gorgeous tiling and have always though that was a cross stitch pattern waiting to happen; sadly I think I'm the worst cross stitcher known to mankind. It's not my faith, so I don't profess to be an expert, but it's interesting that you usually see Jesus portrayed with blond hair. I've only seen him portrayed as a brunette. It's funny, I have a cousin in Ohio that bears an uncanny resemblance to the images I've typically seen. |

(snip) mirjam Let me relate a true story about our Canadian flag. Several years ago, the Toronto Blue Jays baseball team got into the World Series. For the first time in history, a non-US team played in this yearly classic. The first game was in the USA, and a color party of US Marines carried the Canadian flag onto the field ***UPSIDE DOWN***; it could hardly have been more insulting, being broadcast live on national television. Yes, we lodged a minor protest. A few days later, the first World Series game played outside the USA, occurred in Toronto. Contrary to all protocol, the same color party of the US Marines carried the Canadian flag onto the field, this time right way up; and received a standing ovation. |

Personally I can`t see much in there that`s any more offensive than loads of other cartoons you see about any faith or nationality. The problem is with the Muslim mindset - it seems to me that they look for offense in anything. Pat P |

I always think it strange that He`s usually portrayed as a white,
brownhaired man! Pat P "Sarah C." wrote in message ps.com...
