Sorry to be so 'dumb' about this, but I'd hate to make a mistake and ruin
good wool.

No Noreen, wool will notfelt when it is just sitting in the microwave. It
will felt though when agitated, or there are great cahnges of temps. or
both together.

When I dye wool whit natural dyes you have to simmer it for one hour,
while you gently stir the skeins or fiber in lots of water so it is free
floating and you do not wildly agitate it, or change temperatures
drastically from hot to cold or cold to hot.

Moisture plus agitation make felt. Do you plan to stand there
stirring the stuff as it nukes? *g*

Well this message thread and the links prompted me to hunt out the 3 packets of
Kool Aid i brought back from the US and have a go at dyeing some BFL and some
Leicester x Cheviot (the last was a batch i bought off ebay for a song pre
spinning wheel)

I used the microwave method- putting the dye into boiling water in my heat
proof dish, putting in the soaked yarn and nuking for 5 mins. Talk about easy
peasy! I had black cherry, grape and berry blue and the colours are amazing!

I used quite a lot of yarn because i had limited kool aid supplies so they are
quite variegated in tone- which i really like as they are sort of hand painted-
and i now have about 500gs of turquoise, purple and bright pink yarn.

The yarn hasn't felted in the slightest but i am half planning on trying to use
it to knit bags for Christmas pressies using the booga bag free pattern- This
calls for Noro Kureyon, which is then it is fulled- here's hoping my leicester
x *will* felt now.lol

So thanks for giving me the push!

regards
Sarah

Here is a question for those who make their own....

When dyeing, do you dye the wool before making it into yarn or do you make
it into yarn then dye it?

Hugs,
Cori

Depends on the effect you want. If I want to spin yarn that is
consistently colored throughout the batch, I dye the wool, blend
together the different dyelots on a carder, then spin the yarn.

If I want slight shade variations in the finished product, I spin
first and dye second. Or maybe I want to make space-dyed variegated
yarn, or try my hand at reproducing the patterning that's so popular
right now in commercial sock yarn - all of these things are better
achieved by dyeing the yarn and not the fiber.
