Default Doum Palm Nuts

Hi folks. I just discovered that the palm fruits we'd picked (right
from the trees) four years ago while we were in angola are actually
Doum Palm nuts. We collected about a sackfull of them because they
looked pretty and smelled nice as decorations. Anyway, after removing
the outer pulp of one, I came across a really hard shell that wouldn't
crack even under a very large hammer. Four years later, I finally
decided to saw one of them open with a jeweler's saw, and discovered
the ivory nut inside. It was a pain in the arse.
My question is, is there any other way (low tech) that I can crack
these buggers open?
And also, what's the best way to carve them? They're smaller than
tagua nuts and I think they might also be a little harder on the moh's
scale, but I'm not sure.
Any other information on Doum Palm nuts would be greatly appreciated
too. Thanks!
