Hi

You wanna be in Australia - Good quilting fabric runs to a whooping
A$26.95 a metre! Most of it is imported from the US, but as you can
image not a lot of major S.E.X. goes on down here :-)

Thanks for the feedback, everyone!

Another question, one I'm sure will have a lot of different answers,

depending
on geographic area, personal circumstances, etc.:

I'm in the DC area, where things are usually pretty expensive. At

G-Street
Fabrics (one of the better known fabric stores) the cottons in the

quilting
area ran about $10-11/yd. That seemed a bit expensive to me. Am I

just
out of
touch, or do fabrics generally run that much? (I didn't get to look at

the
regularly priced fabrics at JoAnn's---they were locking the door as the

cutter
was cutting my order!)

1. How do you decide what to buy? I went to the clearance table, and looked
at some fabric, but how do you know what colors you need? Should I stick with
small prints?

don't limit yourself to small prints! I buy what I like, with no plan in
mind, and try to not overdoit...

2. How MUCH do you buy? Since I'm not purchasing for any particular project,
do I get 1/2 yard? 1 yard? 3 yards?

depends... I used to buy FQs, then upgraded to half yards, now get
yards... if it is going to be for no quilt in particular, there is no
rule on how much to get... I guess enough to satisfy your craving?

3. When I get it home, do I wash it right away? Is that what you are
supposed to do? I've made three quilts: two flannel blankets (I pre-washed
those fabrics), and one wall hanging (I didn't wash those). Should I wash
everything?

I wash everything, but there are two camps on it.

4. Storage? I thought about those large plastic containers, perhaps sorting
by color when I get enough. Is there a better way?

they say fabric needs to breath, and plastic containers condense
humidity.. I have mine in open shelves, in a place where they get little
sunlight..

them at least that I can recognize.. are you having problems with the
replies?
