Need help with a knot...
Hey there,
I know nothing about knots, bends, hitches, etc. and am looking for some advice. I've been meaning to pick up a book but haven't gotten to it yet (any suggestions?). Anyway, I have a question. I would like to know a good knot (?) that will give me a loop in the middle of a line that I can bring the end of the line back through to cinch against. What I am actually looking for is one that is easily undone. I hope that makes sense. The one I use now works but the knot gets very tight when I cinch and it is difficult to undue. Can someone here point me in the right direction or tell me the right terminology so I know what to search for. Thanks. -- BeerBoy |

The classic knot to tie yourself a loop in the middle of a rope that will hold in both directions, will not slip, and is relatively easy to untie is the Butterfly Knot. It's also known as the Alpine Butterfly. You can see an explanation and diagrams at: http://www.chockstone.org/TechTips/Butterfly.htm Regards, O J |

If that is the case then he can take that Alpine Butterfly and use it to make a 'Versatackle' which I feel is what he is after. There is a link to a 'Versatackle' below. http://www.geocities.com/roo_two/Versatackle.html Another alternative is the 'Truckers Hitch' shown below, but this does require tension to be applied at all times to stop it slacking off. http://www.mitsu4wdclubqld.org/tips/...ed_part_ii.htm HTH, Larry Green |

I don't have a lot to add to the info already offered, just based on
what BeerBoy describes. I'd imagine a Lineman's Loop would fit the bill in terms of the loop, but if he's still not satisfied with its ease of untying, another alternative is a general purpose loop on the bight (away from the rope ends) called the Span Loop: http://www.geocities.com/roo_two/spanloop.html BeerBoy, before you go out and pick up the Ashley Book of Knots (good book, two thumbs up), you can browse my knot pages to see if they help. It shouldn't take too long. You might start with this page of quick definitions: http://www.geocities.com/roo_two/glossary.html Good luck, roo |

Thanks for all the help people!
The butterfly/lineman loop is exactly what I'm after. Thanks for the links to the knot pages too. Very interesting stuff. Since I got such a great response to my 1st question, I'll ask another. What is your favourite kind of rope for camping or odd jobs like tying up a load on a pickup? Thanks again. -=-BeerBoy |
