That's as bizzarre as the time I was on the phone with a customer when I
worked at Rejuvenation here in Portland OR... the retail end mind you, we didn't do mail order calls so this was a fluke... and as he gave me his address it dawned on me that he had lived ACROSS THE STREET from me in Oakland. -Kalera http://www.beadwife.com http://www.snipurl.com/kebay mjoann wrote: Kalera Stratton wrote: I am trying to figure out the probability of two active, posting members of this newsgroup, neither of whom know each other offgroup, both being from Downers Grove IL. -Kalera There's someone here who lives just a few miles from me. Chuck Driver of Blue Heeler has a sister in Fairbanks who doesn't know what
to do with the beads she's gotten. She lives about a mile away. Down the hill, over to the school, and take a left. And she had looked at the house next door when it was on the market last fall. We will meet soon. Tina "mjoann" wrote in message ... the first beads I owned were evil eye beads. my mother's side of the
family comes from cyprus, and for as long as I can remember, my Nene (grandmother) has kept me well supplied with evil eyes of all shapes and sizes. Some were just plain, round blue glass or plastic beads..much like a small pony bead, and lacking the typical eye spots. others were the typical round, flat-ish blue glass ones with the round white iris and black pupil dot in the middle. I had necklaces, bracelets, rings, and keyrings all adorned with them. I had loose ones that I kept in little boxes. Every time she took a trip to cyprus, she'd bring back little bags filled with evil eyes, and always made sure I had one to wear. I still have a great many evil eye beads, fancy and plain (my fanciest is a truly hideous one that's shaped like a proper eye and edged with small, real diamonds..I never wear it, it's so ugly), and my Nene still brings them back from cyprus and still makes me take a few every time I go visit her. as far as regular beads go, I always had a lot of those when I was little. I can remember happily stringing cheap plastic beads on yarn and sewing thread when I was a kid. I also used to make little dolls and robots out of beads and wire. I still have some of the bead dolls, but none of the robots, sadly..I loved those the most, so I carried them around with me a lot, which was probably why they all ended up getting lost or broken. -amber. |

I know what my first bead memories are! It finally came back to me. It was
right here on RCB. Yep! I was thinking about making a few beaded things and came across this newsgroup. Then I signed up for classes and now I'm lampworking. It's all your fault! And I couldn't love you any less for it! Isn't it amazing what this group has done for me. I feel so comfortable here even if I make waves once in a while. I can say 'bite me' and no one is too offended. Thanks everyone! "mjoann" wrote in message ... Su,
Which of those places do you current live in? marisa2 Su/Cutworks wrote: Kalera wrote: I am trying to figure out the probability of two active, posting members of this newsgroup, neither of whom know each other offgroup, both being from Downers Grove IL. Throw in Louisville, Bloomington IN and Milwaukee and see what happens! I've been reading the info on the bead show in Milwaukee with a blend of nostagia, envy and homesickness. My sis is coming over from near Milwaukee this summer for a visit, but it may be some time before I get back over that way to the US. -Su |

I don't remember my first beads - but I've always been attracted to shiny
pretties too. I can remember looking at my Mom's costume jewelry and I had a great Aunt that had fabulous goodies. My Mom got me into beading - my first beading/jewelry was for a 4-H competition - I used some plastic beads, wooden beads, sequins, buttons etc and made bracelets and necklaces. I know I still have at least one of the bracelets - might have to hunt around for the necklaces! Kathy K (also a magpie) "Su/Cutworks" wrote in message ... I suppose they'd be classified as beads. When I was a kid we lived in Downer's Grove, IL. It was a great place to live, much like being inside a Ray Bradbury story without the scary bits. I was only five when this happened, and today playing with my son who is almost 5 now, it made me remember the bracelet I was given that year at Halloween. We had those really cool older neighbors, the kind who would feed you tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches, and never did we worry about them being anything but lovely, kind people with nothing on their minds but enjoying being around their neighbors. I remember them well, but can't tell if they looked old to me because they were or if I was so young. Anyway, they gave me my first 'real' set of beads at Halloween. It was a bracelet, with discs of glass that looked like Life Savers almost, linked together. I remember trying to eat one, because they looked so good. I came close to cracking a tooth, I bit down on one so hard. I remember my parents laughing at me and explaining that it was something pretty to wear on my wrist. It was days before they could talk me into taking it off again. That started my lifelong love of beads and bracelets and shiny things. I'm really a magpie at heart, and one of these days I think I'll have to find some glass disks with holes in the middle and make up a new bracelet to remind me of the one I had back then. In 1958. Almost a lifetime ago now, but as fresh in my mind as the day it happened. Ever since then I've been an avid accumulator of things shiny. I think if I'm ever reincarnated I'd have to be a magpie. -Su -- My Floating Needle blog at: http://www.floatingneedle.co.uk |

No no no not a freckle. It's a bead

When you were a baby, did she pin them to your clothes? My sister-in-law's family does that - evil eyes and little medals of the Blessed Virgin. I knew better than to question it. Bob's mom used to believe in mysticism that involved lighting a special candle on Christmas Eve to remove any curses you had built up during the year. She tried to explain it to me a couple of times, but I started laughing and got smacked instead. She did have one odd belief that I thought was great - a pregnant woman's every whim must be satisfied immediately, or the child will have birthmarks. Her "proof" was that a cousin was born with a birthmark shaped like an Italian cookie because his mother was unable to obtain them during her pregnancy. (You can stop laughing now) Unfortunately, I was so nauseated during my pregnancy with DD that I had no cravings - perhaps she should have had a birthmark shaped like an IV, since I spent so much time in the hospital getting rehydrated. Kathy N-V P.S.: No birthmarks on me, DD has a teeny brown spot on her forehead. Maybe I wanted a freckle or something. --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
