Default OT - Sunday School

That really is weird. Stuff like that is supposed to be taken care of by the
offerings taken during services, or whatever donations are recieved. I would ask the
pastoral staff what the reasoning is behind it, and if they don't take away the fees,
at least let them know your financial situation and ask for a "scholarship" for your
DD. If not, maybe it's time to start looking for a new church.

Ok I thought I would vent in here a little bit. We have belonged to this
church since DD was in my tummy. About three years. I have signed her up
for Kids Day Out at my same church for Tuesdays and Thursdays. Which
charges a fee to keep your child during the day. Very understandable. Well
this is the first year she will be able to attend Sunday School. I am very
excited to sign her up so she will other friends to play with. I have waited
for this so I can be more involved with other church activities that take
place during Sunday School. Well when I get the form they are charging a
$20.00 fee to go to Sunday School. A FEE FOR SUNDAY SCHOOL. I am livid.
We are already on a tight budget with school. And all the extra little fees
that go along with that. Let alone to be charged another fee to go to
sunday school.

First of all is there anyone else who pays to go to Sunday School? I have
never heard of such a thing. I called to other churches in my area to find
out if this is something new in my area. They all laughed in my face that a
fee would be assessed on Sunday School. I haven't spoken with anyone at the
church about it because I am too angry to speak to anyone right now. Afraid
of what I might say!

Any thoughts or opinions are much appreciated.

Thanks
Amy

FWIW, most (albeit not all) synagogues charge some kind of fee for Sunday
School and a separate fee for Bar/Bat Mitzvah Preparation, so I don't find
it odd at all. After all, teacher's salary and books/materials has to come
from somewhere.

Gracious! I hope that's not a weekly fee!

First of all, I've never heard of charging for Sunday school. I know
I live under a rock sometimes so take that for what it's worth.
Secondly, if all the parents started bringing the children to church
for Sunday service in protest this practice might be curtailed before
it even gets started.

Another thought...could be that the church needs volunteers, if no one
does that I would reckon that hiring a person is the next best thing
they can do. My gentle suggestion is that if you want to play a
bigger part in the church community get involved, get others involved
and take turns conducting lessons, weekly, monthly, whatever works for
those volunteering.

Maybe I'm out of it, but I've never heard of such a thing!
Let's see, you want kids to learn about God. You want them
to learn about their religion. You want to encourage parents
to get their kids to Sunday school... so you charge a fee?
I don't know of a single church around here that charges
for Sunday school (I'm not Jewish, so I can't speak for them).
If a church is that hard up for funds, they need to look at
what's not happening within the congregation. Money is
tight for a lot of people now days. (It's the economy pinhead.
Oops. Homeland Sec. will come take me away....)

I'd bet the $20
barely covers "materials" fees--
most likely that is what it is for, since most "sunday school" classes are
taught by volunteers....
They sure aren't "paying" teachers with a mere $20.

I don't think a materials fee is so unreasonable these days...
what with costs being as they are....

Well I am Jewish, so of course we always paid for Sunday School. Frankly, I
don't really understand why you're complaining about $20. Is that one less CD?
Two meals at fast food? It sounds like a small sacrifice to give your child a
religious education.

At the synogogues in large cities, it is not uncommon to pay $1500 a year
membership, plus $1000 a year building fund (whether they are building or not,
the buildings need to be maintained) plus $600 or more for Sunday school, plus
$800 for Hebrew school, PLUS they are constantly asking for more donations
throughout the year. And yes, that is a non-profit organization. I've been on
the board of directors at the local synogogue, and there still isn't enough
money for everything that needs to be done.

I've heard of it before. Having served as a vestry member of a small,
finacially struggling church, I can understand it. I've never been to a
church that did it, and it would probably bother me. Our church gives so
much time and money to so many local charities, that I kind if feel like it
would be asking members, "Oh, and could you contribute to one more
thing..........."

I don't know the circumstances of the original poster, but this kinda
bugged me. For all I know, that $20 could mean choosing between
religious education and getting a necessary prescription filled; or
choosing between a religious education and putting gas in the car to go
to work.

Cheers,
Carla (no children, no religion)

It's been a long time since I've been around a Sunday School, but in
the ones I've seen (particularly for children of the age in question)
there were no textbooks or anything. Maybe some "Jesus Coloring Books"
or photocopied things. And there was never a cost.

As I mentioned, it's been eons since my firsthand experience, and
these were Lutheran, United Methodist and Southern Baptist churches
I'm talking about.
