OT GERDlings
Our poor Damian has been having a time of it. 22 days old and he is on his fourth type of formula. He was projectile vomiting, having a lot of gas, and seemed to be in considerable distress every time he had a BM though he was definitely _not_ constipated. So he had to have a gastric series to see if they could figure it all out. The diagnosis is gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Mama only has milk on one side, so supplementing with formula is necessary. So he is now getting pharmacy formula instead of grocery store formula (thank heavens for WIC!) He also has two prescriptions prilosec (omeprazole) and regulan (metoclopramide), and all told the new formula and the two prescriptions seem to have made him vastly more comfortable and he is keeping his food down. Now we enter into the research phase. Just how careful do you have to be feeding little bittys with GERD when they start on new food? Will he have it forever or is it a temporary thing caused by something at birth? Will he grow out of it? DD was just so relieved that they could do something for him that she hasn't even started wondering yet. Considering she got to sleep for more than 20 minutes at a shot for the first time since he was born the night he started the meds I am not surprised! So has anybody had any experience with this sort of thing? I am collecting up the info to pass on to DD when she has had more than a few hours steady sleep and can think again. NightMist -- Nothing has been the same since that house fell on my sister. |

Nephew Gabe (the Babe) was a 13 wk premie who was diagnosed with GERD when he was moved from IV fluids to breast milk/formula 5 yrs ago. He was in NICU for 13 weeks before he came home, still with GERD. He was declared ok when he came home. So, yes they do out grow it. Hang tough! Ask the Dr if he was born without a Sphincter Valve. I was, but wasn't
diagnosed until my 40's and had the first of 2 'repair' surgeries. I'm on both of those meds and probably will be forever. (Reglan was an on/off thing but now it's daily once again as I have another Hiatal Hernia) DS had the projectile vomiting and the Dr said he was 'allergic' to my milk! That was a hard one to handle...first babe and all.. He hasn't ever been able to 'just drink milk' but can eat very small amounts of plain vanilla ice cream and does have cheese on his burgers. He's 6' and wears a size 14 shoe..... Butterfly (Hope theses meds straighten things out for them) "NightMist" wrote in message ... Back to Lurkdome, Marian and the cracked assistants Boston First of all, my friend's son had GERD--very impressive projectile vomitting. He is now an almost senior in college and hasn't had to be kept upright after a feeding for 20+ years (this part was kind of a drag when he was tiny). The story was that sometimes a stomach etc is immature and will catch up in time. Second, Marian! Please check in with your very own subject line and give us an update on you and those lovely assistants! Mary |

My dad and youngest brother and I all have hiatal hernias that cause vicious
GERD. Laying down after eating- especially dairy products- cause terrible acid reflux and we all have moderate to severe esophagus damage from the acid. We all take Prilosec to help- plus my brother is about to have his second surgery to repair the problem. He's been sleeping in a recliner for years- he can't lay down flat at all. It sucks. I'll say some prayers for the darling baby and his exhausted mommy and worried granny. Nobody deserves to be miserable and especially not a tiny one. Leslie & The Furbabies in MO. Bek had this as well, and before we put her on any medication, the doctor wanted to try mixing rice cereal in with the formula - she was about a month and a half old when they told us this. It seemed to help her until my MOther decided to bounce her right after a feeding....not my fault, but Mother stuck me with her dry cleaning bill. Something to consider Larisa |

NM:
First, congrats on your new grandson! I just took a peek in the Mayo Clinic site and there IS a report that may suit your needs. It is titled Infant Acid Reflux. I found it by going to Mayoclinic.com and using the word GERD as the search. If I could copy and paste that I would, but I can't so I won't! -- Pat "NightMist" wrote in message ...
