The Forum Hosted by Google for the Jewelry addicted Join Us: http://groups.google.sc/group/vincen...najewelryforum Vincenzo Taormina http://www.vincenzotaormina.net Not to shoot anyone down or anything, but about the only thing some new forum on google groups could offer is the opportunity to sell jewelry on the group. And that capability, once the sellers find out about it, will quickly destroy the utility of the group (as it almost did to this one, until it became moderated ten years ago). For those who actually do love jewelry and the craft, and want places to discuss it or showcase their work instead of just hawking it, it's hard to come close to beating the already existing groups. This one, for example, has been around since the early 90s. It's moderated status keeps out spam and blatant commercialism, and usually manages to reduce the occasional fights to a dull roar instead of letting them destroy the group. For those who only want to selfishly use the group for advertising, of course, we're not the place, but I suspect your new group won't benefit from that either, if it's allowed. (voice of experience there...) And none of us here, or on google groups, can hope to even dimly compete with the 500 pound gorilla in the room, the Orchid list hosted on the Ganoksin.com web site. With far more subscribers than will ever bother to check out any of the google groups or this newsgroup, the Orchid list really is the biggest and most active discussion forum for jewelry makers and lovers in the world. Makers even get free showcase space on the Ganoksin site if they wish to display their work to fellow jewelers. Again, it's for jewelry lovers and makers, not merely for those looking to sell. For that, there's always Ebay... |

I was ready to dedicate some of my time on this project, but I relized that would have bee waste of time Thanks to your response. I eventually will delete the Group and go in Vacation. See you all Later Vincenzo, Please be careful not to misinterpret the real meanings of the responses you've gotten to your new google group. It's not that people are trying to just discourage your interest or put down the idea. Here are the two main problems as I see them. First, because your new discussion forum is linked to your site and your name, even if your real intent in putting up the new group is to promote discussion and an honest passion for jewelery, the association with your own company/web site, etc, makes it look as though this new group is intended mostly to advertise and promote your own work, rather than being fully impartial. In our world today, we are all bombarded with so much advertising and attempts to get us to look at one product or another, that we all tend to be suspicious of even the suggestion of marketing, when it's presented as trying to be something else. Even if your new google group really is an honest attempt to be a new discussion forum, it looks like advertising, and people are not quick to discount that. This doesn't mean they don't like jewelry, or that they don't like YOUR jewelry, or anything of the sort. It merely reflects suspicion on the motives behind the new group. That doesn't mean those suspicions are correct, or even that advertising your site is wrong, it just means this is an impediment your group would face. Second is simply that, as we've pointed out, there are already many jewelry discussion forums in existance. In addition to this newsgroup and the Orchid mail list, you will find there are many other discussion forums that have been set up by many other web sites and companies, usually with the same intent as yours. Simple observation will show that few of them get all that much traffic. It seems more logical, if you wish to engage in discussion (and we all wish that), to try and use the existing successful forums for that purpose, rather than trying to initiate a new forum, if that new forum does not create a new capability. Remember that about the only thing that is restricted in either this newsgroup or the Orchid list, is actual advertising of jewelry for sale, and this restriction is not there because the list owner, or me (the moderator of this newsgroup) arbitrarily decided it should be. The restriction is there because the USERS of these forums wanted it that way. This newsgroup was not moderated when it was formed, but readers, in 1997, became sufficiently annoyed with advertising and for sale ads, (and incessant posts from gem dealers), to organize a vote to make this a moderated group. The group charter, which defines what's allowed, was written by group users in order to make the group best meet the needs and desires of it's users, and if those desires, as expressed by users to me, ever change, I'll be only too happy to adapt the group to meet those changed desires. The same can be said as well, of the Orchid list. It's moderation policies exist only to make that list as useful as possible. If users of that list wish things differently, you can be assured Hanuman will change things to match what people want in the list. Rather than being discouraged, and "going on vacation" from the idea, may I suggest that people here in this group, or on the Orchid list, would welcome your participation. As a fellow professional and talented designer and jeweler, your input is valuable to us, and we'd all hope that you'd find the interaction with all of us, to be equally interesting to you. Just because we don't seem to feel that a new google group is needed for discussion purposes, doesn't mean you should give up on the basic idea of enjoying a discussion forum about jewelery topics, for jewelry lovers of all types. That's why we're all here in the first place. By the way, the reason this group, and the orchid list, restricts the format of postings (no HTML, no direct image attachments/graphic files) is simply technical in nature, relating to server overloads, database size, message retention times, and the like. It's much more efficient for the newsgroup as a whole, when message sizes are kept small, thus the requirement to post in simple askii. And asking people to put images on a web server, instead of in the message itself, is also simply efficient. Newsgroup messages exist in many multiples, on all the many news servers in the world. Large files take up. worldwide, much more space. It's much more efficient to take up that space on only one web server somewhere, rather than duplicating it everywhere, and doing this improves the overall functioning of the newsgroup, while still making the image files easily available to everyone. It also makes it possible for the poster of the images, to correct mistakes, edit and update photoes, etc. Please don't feel the negative response to your new google group is reason to be discouraged. Just consider changing where you'd like to hold your discussions. And enjoy the vibrant discussion forums that already exist. By the way, please also remember that there is a specific and quite effective, advertising method that always has, and still remains, valid on this group, and the orchid list. By longtime internet convention, it's common for people to include a "signature file" after their signature/name at the end of a message. This is often a simple line or two, detailing who they are, or their contact information, but it also often contains the URL to the posters web site, if they have one. This may seem low key, but it's very effective. If you engage in interesting conversations in this group or the orchid group, anyone who finds your comments of interest will then perhaps be curious about who you are, and will check out your web site. This of course is the aim of all advertising in the first place, and it sends people to your site with the authority of your writing, not with some slick advertisement. In the end, you'll find that participation in this group, or especially the orchid list (because it's so large) will definately increase the number of people who visit your site. It's well worth doing, if this was part of your purpose in setting up a discussion forum. Hope this helps. Peter Rowe moderator, rec.crafts.jewelry |
