Favorite hoop sizes?
I have a Grace Hoop with floor stand that is 24".
I am thinking a smaller one might be easier to maneuver. They are sort of rounded square shaped. I can get an 18" or 14" but don't know which I might find easier to use. Anyone have some suggestions or comments about their favorite quilting hoops? TIA, Taria |

TIA, Taria Taria, I like to have the largest one I can comfortably use. That means that the measurement of my arm from inner elbow to just past my wrist is the maximum radius I can consider; for me that's approximately 9", meaning I can reach easily to the center of the hooped area. So, if I were going to choose between an 18" hoop and a 14" hoop, I'd go for the 18" one -- it will mean fewer changes of position for the quilt and an easier time of it when you're doing larger motifs. That's just my opinion, of course, and I do have a smaller 14" hoop that I use mainly for when I want to take it with me out of the house somewhere. I also have a 21" floor hoop, which works for me, though it would be more comfortable if it were a little smaller. -- Sandy in Henderson, near Las Vegas my ISP is earthlink.net -- put sfoster1(at) in front http://home.earthlink.net/~sfoster1 AKA Dame Sandy, Minister of Education |

Thanks Sandy. I called to ask about ordering the
18" and they surprised my and offered a 14" also. It seems the 14 would be kind of small for a floor hoop so I am leaning to the 18". It is kind of pricey so I want to be sure. DH says buy it and don't worry about it but my thrifty nature has hold of me. TIA, Taria I have the Grace 18" floor hoop in the square shape and I love it. I can put an entire 12" block centered in the hoop and quilt it. I like to be able to see the whole block while I'm quilting so I can tell how things are going. I find the size comfortable. Recently I got an office supply store lamp that fits in the frame hole and boy do I love it! That was well worth the $10 for the lamp to have bright light right where I'm working. I say, go for the 18 and then hit the local office supply/drugstore type place near you and buy the lamp and a true color lightbulb while you are waiting for the hoop delivery. marcella |

Thanks Marcella, I have a lamp that goes in the fits in the
stand already. I use that a lot. Since I hit 40 my vision has pooped out and the light really helps. I don't have a true color bulb so I will treat myself to that! Thanks Sandy, I remember that is your favorite.
Do you ever wear them out or does one last your forever? My favorite carry around 'just hoop' is an oval around 14" wide by maybe 12". I don't hand quilt anything like the amount of work you do. Taria: Go buy a 18" hoop with out stand, and practice with that.
You can prop it against a table edge to approximate the stand hoop. Perhaps you can take a project to the store and try out some of their hoops. I have a 24" on stand and in some situations it is a tad too big. PAT in VA/USA Taria wrote: Thanks Sandy. I called to ask about ordering the 18" and they surprised my and offered a 14" also. I too found the 24" to be a little too big for comfort.
Grace wants almost as much for the hoop as for the whole setup. I ended up buying the 14" lap stand for travel, and I can swap out the hoop with my 24" when I want. The 18" would have been ideal, because the 14" is a little small. Valerie in FL "Taria" wrote in message news:UzA2f.13521$wm3.10316@trnddc01... I have a Grace Hoop with floor stand that is 24".
