True, we could all make the assumption that somewhere she has an e-mail
program. I've used it with Entourage in the prior Microsoft Office suite.
Bet it works with Outlook. Don't know if it works with whatever she uses
for her aol connection - or even the free e-mail services like Gmail or
Yahoo.

Hi Guys,

You are making it complicated - go to http://www.eternal-september.org

and follow the directions. It's free, it is acclaimed as a newsreader
and streets ahead of google groups.

Eons ago I used Netscape but have long since abandoned that, this is
even easier.

Ditto to what Sheena has said. Eternal-september works very well. I use it
for access to the newsgroups, and actually have it as the link via my e-mail
program. Just give it a try.

Also, WRT browsers, you should be able to download Firefox from Mozilla,
which is free, and works on PC platforms, as well as Mac platforms. It's
pretty robust, and they update it regularly. I cannot imagine what your DH
did that would prevent your laptop from being able to install a reasonable
web browser.

Good luck.

Probably the person in the woodpile is aol - worst thing that ever
happened !

LOL - too true. And their world hq are just a few miles from my house.
They finally sold half their campus to Raytheon - after the sudden layoff of
3000 people a few years ago. OTOH, we know a bunch of very young AOL

millionaires - who took stock options and sold out at the peak.

In a pinch anyone with an original disc for windoze 95 or 98 could download
Netscape from either of those discs and then search for an update somewhere.

Outlook Express is still available for download for windoze XP home and pro.
Not sure if it will work for windoze vista or windoze 7.

IMHO Outlook Express out performs windoze hotmail any day of the week, plus
there are no bloody ads. cluttering up the screen.

What does all of that mean? I have no clue other than I understand
the meaning of the words but NOT what it means as regards to using a
computer!!! I have AOL and Internet Explorer on my computer and I
*could* use IE for e-mail if I wanted. But WHAT in the world does
having an e-mail program have to do with accessing newsgroups.
Here's what I have pictured in my mind..... The newsgroups are out
there in the ether somewhere on **something** called Usenet. I need to
have a program on my computer that will *find* the groups I want to
read, then I have to have a program that then sends the newsgroup to my
computer so I can read them. Right now I have that German program
(which I pay for) that finds the groups and sends the info to Netscape
7.2 which I use to read the groups.
So, I just went to eternal-september and registered. Apparently
they will e-mail me a user ID and password that I will use to access the
newsgroups I am interested in. I'll let you know and if I get bollixed
up, I will be e-mailing Sheena screaming for help.
I absolutely HATE not really understanding what is going on -- other
than in the most rudimentary terms. I mean, I am not unintelligent but
when you guys start talking about this stuff I just sit here scratching
my huh going "HUH????" LOLOLOL! CiaoMeow ^;;^

I'm going to be in a world of hurt when I get to Lizard land and have
to start using the new "stuff". We are signed up with FrontierNet for
our phone, Internet and Telly. I will be getting DISH for the Telly and
I have had DirecTV for the last 11 years so I will have to learn how to
manage that. Then for my Internet, I will have to access everything
from my frontiernet e-mail account. That makes no sense to me at all.
why the hell can't I just do as I have always done and turn on the
computer and either go to my newsgroup link or my AOL link? I just
don't understand. I'll have to see what happens -- the frontiernet guy
will come to the cabin and hook everything up on 25 May but then I still
have to have someone different come hook up the phone!!! VBS I swear
the techies do this on purpose just to make us non-techines frustrated.
I absolutely DO NOT understand why all this crap has to be so
difficult and laborious!!! Rant Off for now -- LOLOL! CiaoMeow ^;;^

I am replying to my own post using Thunderbird :-))))))). I couldn't
get eternal-september to operate. I registered, etc. but can't get it
to show me the posts! It really should NOT be this involved, etc. Jeri
sent me a wonderful e-mail explaining stuff so I understand a bit more.
OK --

VBS -- this is totally ridiculous!!! I'm back at Netscape with this
e-mail. I can't even find a way to sign on to eternal-september so that
it lets me access the newsgroups so that's a bust. When I am in
Thunderbird, it shows me ALL of the posts stored for whatever length of
time they keep them -- it's something like 3364 posts. I can find no
way to tell T-bird to only show me the posts that have not been read!
The laptop now has Netscape 7.2 AND Thunderbird AND eternal-september
but none of those programs have any way to access the newsgroups -- no
tabs that we can find to click for newsgroups. I wonder if I need to
somehow get the laptop to "talk" to my news server which is
news.individual.net (I think). I have been on this f-ing computer for
THREE HOURS now trying to get one of the programs to work so that I can
have DH load it onto the laptop. I am getting extremely frustrated and
I just don't understand WHY he can't transfer the info on THIS computer
to the laptop and have it be the same! VBS -- you don't want me to
tell you what I am really thinkng I just thank heavens I took my happy
pill this am or I would go out and capture a techie and strangle the sob
toot sweet!!! CiaoMeow ^;;^

I dont know whether this is of the least interest, and I dont know if I
can explain how I access rctn in detail, but I am using software that is
more than 20 years old. It is the sort of software that was designed to
read rctn, in the days when rctn started, and 10 messages a day was
considered heavy traffic. But it is a lovely way of reading rctn. Jim.
