lee does a purl row in ther make it Old Shale?

Dunno? I've seen it on garter, on stockinette, on stockinarter. I've
seen it called Old Shale, Print o'the Wave, Feather and Fan, probably
a few other things depending on which book I pull off the shelf and
whether it was written by a Shetlander or by somebody else

I particularly like to use it as edging on a triangular shawl with the
body knitted in garter stitch.

Try doing a right click on the web address, then selecting Open. That
works for me.

Also, Interweave has a book out now with nothing but shawl and wrap
patterns to knit. They are all pretty and vary in levels of difficulty.

how about a triangle shawl with lacey holes that is simple and quick.
cast on 4sts
Garter stitch 2 rows
Row 1. Knit 1 Make one by picking up the bar/loop inbetween the stitch you
just knitted and the next stitch, knit it off, Yarn forward Slip one, knit
one pass slipped stitch over Make one knit last stitch or in pattern terms
it would read

Row One: K1; Mk1; YF S1 K1 PSSO; Mk1; K1
Row Two: K1 Purl to last stitch K1
Row Three: K1; Mk1; YF S1 K1 PSSO; til last stitch Mk1 K1.
Row Four and every alt row as row TWO.
Row Five as three

Repeat last two rows until it is long enough and wide enough for the wrap
you need. then cast(bind) off all stitches and add a fringe on the two
edges if you want to.

Hope this is clear enough

i'm looking for a knitting pattern for a nice shawl or lapghan
to make for my grandma's 101st birthday in May. i'm not a fast
knitter so something fast & easy would be best, i think, but
something with more pizazz than plain garter stitch.
it *has* to be knit, as my crochet talents extend only to cat
toys
any suggestions?

Welcome to the group! ) Where are you from... not *exactly*, but what
country, state, province, or whatever?

Cute name by the way... I don't mean to insult, so please don't take this
wrong if I am off the mark... but does it have anything to do with dogs?

thanks, Cher. this sounds easy & pretty. would you choose a
silk/alpaca (or silk/merino) or a mohair yarn for this?
mohair is light & warm, but the fuzzies might be annoying...
