Waistband Interfacing

Dear Friends,

I had a pair of trousers languishing in my closet since last November,
in need only of a waistband. I had no waistband interfacing, and when
I decided I had to get the pants done, I couldn't find any in town. I
finally resolved it, and it proved to be superior to the interfacing
I've been using for years.

I cut two strips of fusible hair canvas, with the hair going across the
short side, the exact finished width of the waistband, and about five
inches longer than anticipated (paranoia).

I always cut my waistbands from the selvage edge, so that I don't have
to fold under the inside edge. I fused the first strip 1/4 inch from
the selvage edge; I fused the second strip right next to it, then cut
the second long edge 5/8 inch past the hair canvas. I don't finish the
ends of the waistband until the first side is attached. Then I finish
the ends, turn the waistband to the inside, and stitch in the ditch
from the outside to complete. The hair canvas gives a lovely, springy
hand to the waistband, and it won't crush.

I was so excited, I made two more pairs of trousers, and a jacket.
Now, if I can find the right color of yarn for a cardigan, I'll have a
whole new fall wardrobe!
