Default Chinese Embroidery Book & Silks

I recently purchased a new book (to me) on the subject of Chinese
embroidery......the bookcover has a large color photo of an exquistely
embroidered vase of Lotus, leaves and blossoms in a blue and white
porcelain jar.

The book is a paperback and not overly expensive for the amount of info
covered on such an exotic subject and the many color pictures featuring
beautiful examples of fine Chinese embroideries from tiny "Lotus" shoes
to court robes to other decorative, ceremonial & household textiles.

I found the book very easy to read with clear information and straight
forward instructions.
Despite having many books on Asian embroidery in my reference library,
this is a well done and informative volume worth adding to my stitching
library.
There are topics presented in this book not covered in others and what I
liked best was the clearness of the author's writing style &
explanations.

The chapters cover:

History & Development of Chinese embroidery
Materials & basic techniques
Chinese embroidery stitches
Symbols & motifs in Chinese embroidery

Title: Chinese Embroidery - Traditional Techniques
Author: Josiane Bertin-Guest
Publisher: Krause Publications 2003 - $24.99
ISBN: 0-87349-718-X

Maybe this was "fate" but while searching for something else in my
"store room" today unexpectedly found a box with a complete collection
of Chinese silks purchased from Needle Necessities years ago I
completely forgot!
A clear lucite box filled with 103 colors, glossy skeins of six stranded
fine Chinese embroidery silks.

From reading the info about Chinese silks used for embroidering, I broke
down one of the six single strands of the Empress silk by untwisting
into two more plies of very fine silk to stitch with.......the type of
fine silk strands many Chinese embroideries are stitched with.

The main negative stitching with this type of silk is the way it snags
on any little roughness no matter how minor, this silk reminds me of
working with rayons as these strands of silk are just as static & fly
away........having a bottle of lanolin hand cream literally on hand
before stitching with silks would definitely be very useful!

Oh goodness. Another book to add to my library. Thanks, Lula! I
learned so very much for the Chang book.

Just wondering if you are referring to, Painting With a Needle by Young Yang
Chung? I see that ECA has just added it to their library.

Yep. That's the one. Outstanding book. Lula reported here on it with
such glowing enthusiasm, I had to get it. I was thrilled. Besides my
book on textiles, this is my most often "look at" book in my needlework
library. It taught me a whole lot, and that's saying a lot. Not just
technique, but color, vision, style, attitude. :-)

Walmart.com has it for $15 and change, plus under $3 shipping. (Strange, no
one that carries it has a picture of the cover, wonder why that is?)

You can see the cover at this link
http://www.chrysalisbooks.co.uk/books/book/0713487798

I have met Josiane and she is a great lady and very, very generous with
her knowledge. Anyone in the UK can do a class with her through
Pearsall's Silks.
