Modification of Stock Eyeglasses?
The only persons/co's who can successully modify titanium frames is the
original maker. Titanium can be resistance welded, argon shielded arc welded or brazed under vacumn in a sealed chamber with pure siver. So to shorten your bridge piece is not viable. Bending is risky and should be done by the frame supplier on condition it is at 'their' risk of damage of breaking. Otherwise go for standard frames which are made from hard drawn brass and can be brazed and refinished by a spectacle repairer. |

Hi Rozita,
There are unfortunately very few craftspersons worldwide who have explored and then mastered titanium as a material for their products. The reasons for this are many, but the main one is the difficulty of joining it with normal craftmens/silversmiths/jewellers techniques. Also its like working spring steel, its hard to do wanything with it unless you are very strong mentally as well as physically. So your search for high quality products is going to be difficult as there are not many to be found. The finest work in titanium is in fact in the medical field such as hip replacements, skull and bone plates . Here, cost is not a main issue. A dentist also uses titanium, he too needs to be to be a master craftsman to start with, but he/she doesnt make the titanium bone implants. Worth a look next time your at your dentist. As to where to start to look? well, try typing titanium with lots of added words like craft or smithing or jewellery etc in your google search engine. Let us know how you get on. Ted Frater Titanium craftsman. |
