Suggestions about fringing

I have an almost completed filet lace project that I've done on 40 count
linen. The almost completed part of it is that I've decided I want to
experiment and try to re-create the deep fringes that was done in the past.

The fringes in the books I'm studying are around 5-6 inches in depth (I'm
guessing) and have been tied or interwoven in intricate designs. Does
anyone have a suggestion as to HOW this was done?

I'm thinking I should follow a macrame-type approach, but I can't figure out
what to do with the corners.

Any and all suggestions welcome.

It's been a *looooong* time since I did this type of fringing.
Anyway, Instructions were to cut additional lengths of fiber and use
them as a "bridge" between the perpendicular edges of the finished
piece. The ;lengths of fiber were laid in place and tied to the side
and the bottom so that the fringe ended up all the way around the
finished shawl -- not just the top/bottom and two sides. Does this
make sense to you? It's late here, I'm sleepy and not thinking too
clearly but I distinctly remember doing this. It's just a P.I.T.A. to
