I wonder if it's a coincidence that Laine (lovely name BTW) is the French
word for 'wool'? And what a beautiful little girl. Her parents must be
vey proud, as well as exhausted, elated and surrounded by visitors. Welcome
to the world Laine

Allaya,
I must have done something wrong. I saw the pictures, but all the other
stuff people are talking about, I didn't see. :-(

of course not - I had the cutest babies on the world, too ;-)))

No coincidence, Christine! Five years of taking French in High School and
being a knitter (and it being year of the sheep in chinese culture)
definitely played a part in selecting a name!

Ah, yes...well I'll tell you all the lactation nurse story...

I went to see one at the hospital because I was worried that Lainey wasn't
getting enough milk. Ever since she was born, my baby had been showing the
"classic" hunger signs, like sucking her fist/fingers and touching her
cheek, even after she finished feeding, so I was terrified that I was
starving her.

Since I'd obviously never done anything like this before, I asked the nurse
what I was doing wrong. She was an older woman with very bad breath, and as
soon as i sat down, she started manhandling my breasts! She showed me what
a "proper" latch on was supposed to be like by shoving a quarter of my now C
sized breast into poor Lainey's little mouth (have you ever seen an infant's
jaw become unhinged? not a pretty sight). This went on for both breasts,
and sure enough, after about a half hour of feeding, Lainey started stroking
her cheek and sucking on her fingers again.

The nurse immediately said, "see, you're not making enough milk. She's
still hungry. You either need to start expressing milk right away, or
supplement her with formula." With the hormones and all going on in my
body, I was just devistated. I'd spent a half hour subjecting poor Lainey
to what seemed to be excrutiating pain getting her mouth open that wide
(she's not a very big baby), and on top of that, I felt so inadequate for
not making enough food for my little girl. So needless to say i went home
in tears and the next feeding I supplemented her with some formula the
hospital gave me.

So I spent a half an hour emptying both breasts and Lainey predictably
started sucking on her fist. So my husband put some formula in a bottle and
started feeding her. The little barracuda sucked down over an ounce of the
formula! Now I was feeling MISERABLE because that would mean I was
producing close to nothing, in my mind! But then, Lainey started vomiting
up all of the formula we gave her plus a little more. Not only did she over
eat, but the formula didn't sit well with her at all, and made her sick.
Lesson to mom: no more formula.

On Friday, I went to see Lainey's pediatrician, and I expressed my concerns
with her about Laine showing rooting reflex all the time, even after she
ate. I told her that I seriously thought that it was just something she
liked to do because every time I feed her, her tummy is nice and hard and
she seems to be full of milk. Then I explained to her what the lactation
nurse at the hospital told me, and the doctor's eyes bugged out! She was
like, "Oh, my goodness! Your baby's mouth is way to small to latch on that
way!" But she had a good laugh over it. She assured me that my daughter
was getting plenty of nourishment because after only nine days, she'd almost
regained all of the weight she'd lost in the hospital and showed no signs of
jaundice (the nurse claimed that she still had a pretty bad case of it, so I
had to remind her that we were Asian, and that we just look that way). So
basically, i was making plenty of milk and not to worry because some babies
just like to suck on things.

So THAT'S why I say evil lactation nurse. How terrible to be worried
about nothing!

Very pretty!!!! She doesn't even have the 'classic' pointy head.

Your comment about 'evil' lactation nurses - were they trying to push it
when you didn't want to? 12 years ago, in my neck of the woods - they
were the exact opposite - all the nurses were telling me how awful I was
to 'want' to breast feed . . . see 'ya just can't win!!!!

From one mother to another - Do it the way that works best for you and
the baby!! That's what matters most. So you're right and they are wrong.

Get all the sleep you can and enjoy, she'll be a teenager in a blink of
the eye and then the fireworks start (for a year or two at least)

LOL THat's pretty funny...I had a similar experience too. Luckily, the
nurses in the delivery room were much more open to my opinions than the
lactation nurse. I told them the baby was coming out and that I really
need to start pushing. They looked and said that it was way too far up to
call the doctor yet, but if I thought it would help, they'd let me
(obviously humoring the hysterical woman in labor).

So I gave it a shot. After two pushes, the baby was crowning, and their
jaws dropped to the floor. Now it was the nurses who were frantic saying
"This woman has abs of steel! Get the doctor in here NOW!!!" No sooner did
the doctor get there did Laine come flying out. I got some interesting
looks, that's for sure! hehehe

Anyway, Adam's um...doing something. I think...it's hard to tell when
you're technically not supposed to get out of bed (oh my...where am I now?).
Hopefully the nursery will be done soon so that I can get the house back in
order. Everything that used to be upstairs is now downstairs, and I no
longer have a living room to enjoy. :P That's okay though...it's been nice
spending so much time getting to know my new daughter.

Awwwwwww - Allaya, Lainey's *gorgeous*!!! You're not biased. g Huge

congrats
to you and Adam. Wonderful pix, too!

Had to giggle about Adam and the nursery. With Laine being in her bassinet

in
your room, though, is he working fast now?? ::very innocent look:: Also

about
you knowing she was coming, and no one believing you...happened to my Mom

with
me. It'd been 11 years since she had my brother, so no one believed her in

the
hospital when she said I was coming, right then. (what, you forget

everything
in 11 years??) *Finally* someone checked, gasped, "Ohmigod, she's

crowning!",
and they whipped her onto a gurney. An intern actually delivered me; Mom's
doctor didn't make it there until it was all over. g

Glad you and Laine made it through safe and she's doing well. Loved the

pix,
and hope to see more when you get 'em!

Hugs,
Monica

How awful - no doubt she never breast fed!!! The more area around the
nipple the better but jeez even my two (8.5 and 9.5 lb) couldn't take in
*that* much!! Besides which, she should know that is perfectly normal
behavior - babies are very, very touchy, feely and *everything* goes in
the mouth for the first few months (years with a lot of them)

One thing for you to know (it seems to be a big secret and shouldn't be)
you are most likely going to get very, very, very sore. . . major
thoughts of quiting might enter your head. Because both of mine came
via C-section, the doctor had prescribed a pain medication that was
compatible with breast feeding, which I didn't think I was going to need
after the first couple days - but then this hit and I would take a dose
about 15 minutes before a feeding time, it's been a while - but it seems
like the pain medication stayed in effect enough that I only needed it
twice a day and it dulled the pain enough to get me through the
feedings. The major soreness lasted a week or so but . . . . so if this
starts happening don't suffer - check with your doctor and see what's
safe - and since you have experience expressing milk - you might want to
put a small supply back - to give yourself a rest once or twice.

Hopefully you won't need this advice!!!!!

Sonya

Allaya,
I breast fed my son - many years ago - and never got sore breasts. I loved
it!
