OT amazing garden experience
AWWWWWWWWW ... this is just FUN!

Well, it ALL came up -soon we would have needed a machete to open the terrace door. So we called in a garden pro, who arrived with 2 more guys and lots of power tools. Yesterday while "rejuvenating" (= chopping in half and removing all dead wood) a row of bushes desperately trying to become trees, they knocked down a blackbird's nest with 2 chicks. (The European blackbird is identical to the American robin, except the males are all black.) The gardener brought the babies over in an empty clay flower pot. Plan A was to wait until dark, then try to tie the nest in a different tree and replace the babies (using gloves). But the slightly older chick was able to escape and disappeared under the perennials. After the garden guys left, I heard baby #2 crying for his parents. Pretty soon, the papa bird arrived with a mouthful of worms and after some hesitation jumped down into the pot. Amazing! So we went to plan B: we hung the pot up under the terrace roof to keep the cats off. The adult birds seem to have accepted it. So keep your fingers crossed they can finish raising this baby! So how are they doing in their new home, Roberta?
My DD has been anxiously watching a nest of eggs, wondering how late in the year they could still hatch, worrying that they might not... then last week they hatched! She says they are the cutest birds she has ever seen. :-) She can see the nest from standing on our porch, at the very edge, so it is far enough away that the parent birds don't seem to mind her there. I love how concerned she is for them, and how respectful of their needs she is. -- Wendy http://griffinsflight.com/Quilting/quilt1.htm de-fang email address to reply "Roberta Zollner" wrote in message ... The baby escaped from the pot sometime today. But he seems to be still
around, because the papa bird chases cats off very energetically! These babies were almost certainly the second clutch. The nest was in a different location from nest #1 back in April. If the food situation is good enough, they seem to keep reproducing. I do love blackbirds. We seem to hear the birds from 3 different territories. The "next door" bird has quite an operatic trill, lovely to hear early in the morning. Roberta in D "frood" wrote in message . com... So how are they doing in their new home, Roberta?
