Could someone explain how to estimate a knitting gauge using "wraps per
inch"?

What I am trying to do is double a sport yarn with a gauge of 6 st & 7 rows
= 1 inch on a US 5 needle to see if it would be considered a worsted weight
yarn. My pattern calls for worsted weight yarn and US 10 1/2 needles.
Would I wrap the doubled yarn around that size needle, or use the worsted
guidelines of size 7-9 needle? Do you wrap the yarn tightly around the
needle? Do you scrunch all of the wraps close together?

I hope this is not too confusing...Thanks in advance for your help.
