Setting Stones In Wood

I'm doing some experimenting with setting stones into wood. I drilled the
smallest possible hole they would fit into and used Liquid Nails, and it
seemed to work pretty well for a couple small garnets, one eighth inch
diameter, and a couple quartz crystals, one quarter inch wide and three
quarters of an inch long.

Is there a better way to do this?

You take a thin slice from the larger piece
of wood.

Drill a small hole in the thin slice where the stone
goes.

With a jeweler's saw, you enlarge the setting
hole in the thin slice, angling the walls to
hold in the stone.

Re-glue the thin slice to the larger piece
with the stone in place. Don't flip the slice!
No glue need touch the stone, although it
may if you don't want it
to move at all. Clamp.

Amazingly, the joints formed when you cut apart
and re-glue slices of wood are almost invisible.
Plain white glue will do.

I have just described a modification of what is
actually known as bandsaw box technique. I suggest
you google up as much on this as possible. Books
on the subject of bandsaw boxes are also available.
They make _great_ jewelry boxes, too.
