"Joanna" wrote in message news0Hse.59241$HI.17736@edtnps84... All my dr said was to exercise at least 15 mins a day and at least 5 days a week. She said 7 days a week would be better. I don't understand this cuz I work as a PCA and put probably 10 miles on my feet a night. On days off daughter and I often go for walks and chase each other around the house running. My chiropractor said almonds, a handful every day and flaxseed oil. Just want to hear some others experiences and thoughts. But the AVERAGE Brit walks 10 miles a day anyway, so you'll need to step it up a bit. How about a job every evening when you get home from work? A bike ride? That's what I do - I cycle to work every day and it takes about 15mins there and 15mins back at a reasonable leisurely pace. Or a swim? 15mins of swimming could easily be about 1/2mile. Just think about how all this exercise will help your Aerobic system too! Charlie. |

May I suggest a glass of red wine with you meal. I recall reading a study about the positive effect of red wine on cholesterol. Carole aka C & S Champlain, NY |

It really doesn't matter how old you are, how thin you are, or how much
you exercize, anyone can have high cholesterol. I was diagnosed with high blood pressure at 16 when, at 5'7" I weighed 95 pounds. I was diagnosed with high cholesterol at 25 and weighed about 120 pounds. I was very active, swam most days, worked on my feet all day doing day care for 6 kids under 4 years old. I never eat fried foods, plenty of veggies and fruit. Both of my parents died at 54 years old from strokes, they had high blood pressure and probably high cholesterol. I don't think they checked for cholesterol in the 60s. I am currently on 5 meds for high blood pressure and high cholestorol, and I rarely have a cholesterol reading under 250. It has been as high as 312. My doctor says that it realy doesn't matter what I do as far as exercize and food, I will always have a problem because of heredity. I still exercize and eat right, but it won't fix the high cholesterol. I've outlived my parents by one year, I hope it's a few more. DH is 6'1" and 200 lbs., he has low BP and average cholesterol. We eat the same food. Go figure. Denise |

That can be the case but not always. Diet and exercise can make a
difference for some people. I would encourage anyone to try to make changes before going straight to meds. You got bad genes, but not everyone with elavated cholesterol does. MAny of us really do eat poorly and don't exercise enough. IT can make a big difference to eat right for some. Don't be discouraged. My DH could eat "steam" and still have high
Cholestoral. DH is not overweight. He excersizes 5 days (treadmill walks and runs), is on 2 different meds and his cholestoral is nice and low, now. He takes Lipitor and Zedia. Some people manufacture their own cholestoral so the meds will take care of that. HTH, Linda |

I too have high cholesterol though my diet probably pales in quality next to
yours. But my mother, who is diabetic and has the healthiest diet anyone can imagine, has high cholesterol also, so don't feel bad. I'm told Omega 3 fatty acids either from the fish itself or from capsules, as well as flaxseed oil, also from capsules or by putting flaxseed into your diet can help. My job is quite physical (radiology technician at a veterinary teaching hospital) but walking is good too. What finally did the trick for me was for my NP to finally put me on Vytorin. It's a newer cholesterol medication that, according to the advertisments, work on the cholesterol your body makes, as well as what you take in from food. (NAYY). It seems to have worked for me pretty well. Hope this helps. If you have any more questions, email me off list. I'd be glad to talk about it with you. -- Debi Ever stop to think, and forget to start again? "Joanna" wrote in message news0Hse.59241$HI.17736@edtnps84... I'm 34 and just got told that I have high cholesterol. I'm shocked. I'm not the one eating a big bag of potato chips every night. I am the one that eats salads, and green stuff along with fresh and canned veggies. My husband won't eat this stuff unless I'm home and I put it on his plate. Other wise it's fast food for him. And to boot he's the one that is about 30lbs over weight, all in the belly. I'm maybe 10 lbs over weight but most of the time it's slightly under 10 lbs. So now that I'm over being angry at him that it happened to me, help. All my dr said was to exercise at least 15 mins a day and at least 5 days a week. She said 7 days a week would be better. Took me two years to get him to go get his back checked. That was after not seeing a dr in over ten years. So I'm working on that one. -- Remove QUILT to reply |

There are a lot of knowledgeable folks who posted in this thread. I can second (or third) some of the thoughts. Firstly, as Sandy pointed out, the total cholesterol number is only part of the equation. Ideally, total should be under 200. But, you have to look at the LDL, HDL and triglycerides. The LDL and triglicerides are the bad guys. The HDL is the good guy. It is possible, especially if your total cholesterol is only a little bit over, that the overage is caused by lots of the good stuff. HDL above 60 is considered PROTECTIVE against heart disease. There is a ratio they should have told you on the test. If the ratio is less than 5 to 1 it's good. If the ratio is 3.5 to 1, it is ideal. Don't panic until you look at all the numbers. And, do the math. If you have an HDL of 60 and a low 3.5 to 1 ratio you total cholesterol will be 60*3.5 or 210. (That number doesn't look so high now, does it) Secondly, cholesterol is NECESSARY for your body to function, and, this is the important part, YOUR BODY MAKES CHOLESTEROL. So, even without adding fatty foods to your diet, you still can have high cholesterol. Your body just may make more than someone elses. So, you don't have to be envious/mad at your DH G When my husband was diagnosed with borderline high cholesterol, his numbers dropped dramitically with only a few dietary changes and supplements. The most important change? OATMEAL every day. Oatmeal acts like a broom, really, and that ONE change accounted for a LOT. Hubby also cut down on fast foods and I substituted frozen veggies for canned. I added more of the good oils to my cooking (I have several different grades of olive oil, some work well for frying, some for eating in salads or dipping into with a nice piece of semolina bread). There was a dietary supplement I ordered for DH at the same time - but danged if I can remember it. The local vitamin store stopped carrying the brand. HTH Lisa in NJ |

Some elevated cholesterol is genetic. You may be one of those people. Talk
to your doctor about Niacin - I hated the side effects but some folks don't mind at all. -- http://community.webshots.com/user/snigdibbly SNIGDIBBLY ~e~ " / \ http://members.ebay.com/aboutme/snigdibbly. http://www.ebaystores.com/snigdibbly...ox&refid=store "Joanna" wrote in message news0Hse.59241$HI.17736@edtnps84...
