Hello,
My favourite nephew will be 18 next June, and I'd like to make him a
Lone Star quilt, queen size. Have any of you here made one, and whose
directions did you like best? I'd like to do strip-piecing instead of
hand piecing a thousand diamonds, and I'd like the star bit to stay on
top of the bed, not hang over the sides.
Any suggestions or advice?

Having done it both ways, I prefer the strip piecing method.
You just have to keep organized when you do it.
The final size of the star is wholey dependent on how good you are at
maths. It looks like fairly easy math. That just makes you
confident, so then you very confidently make everything too large or
too small. My first blazing star was supposed to be a lone star,
then I boggled the math and had to make it bigger.

So:
Do the math at least twice, and then draw out a point to make sure you
have it right.
Keep strictly organized. keep your blocks of strips seperate always.
Pin or box your rows for each point as you go, then double check
before you sew. When you lay them out look hard. Depending on your
color scheme it can be really easy to miss that row that is turned
round.

Kellie:
It wants to be the center medallion for a bed quilt for my bed. A few
rounds of those gorgeous fabrics will go nicely with our rug! Need my snail?

just have to figure out what to do with it now :~) (as in finishing
touches, not to whom it will go.. tis mine all mine y'all)
everything is printed on the interfacing. you pick your colors, cut your
strips, iron/tack them on, sew, flip, iron trim and go to the next row...

here it is partially done (what i finished in class) I have the whole
square now. not sure if it wants to be a center medalion for a bed quilt or
just hang on the wall.

In article . net,

Pati, that would be Jan Krentz's book. Her instructions for strip
piecing this kind of quilt are excellent! I've made two Lone Star
quilts, and the one I did with her instructions was much easier than the
first one. Both of them are pictured he
http://home.earthlink.net/~sfoster1/lonestarquilts.html; it's the
second one down that came from Jan's book. HTH

Isn't that one of the nice parts about quilting, Tricia? The fact that
quilts will wait until we can get to them, unlike children's clothes
that will be outgrown. G When you do get time to try that Lone Star,
you'll love it!
