Default need advice on a table runner

Ever since Merry shared her lovely table runners, I would like to to try my
hand too. Friends of DS are getting married next month and I thought a
runner would make a nice wedding gift. I can design the top, but I have a
few questions:

What's a nice size? width and length. I don't know what size of table they
have so what's an all-purpose size?
I'm going to use the muslin backing I have, but do you put anything in the
middle? Or is it just top and backing? then stitched in the ditch (or
whatever your little heart desires?)

Are there any online patterns for runners? I have a design in mind and can
calculate blocks/layout, but if here was a pattern I wouldn't have to
over-tax my brain

A nice size is 3 blocks the same size - seems to be the norm. Thos blocks are
generally around 10-12 inches each. So 10-12 inches wide by 30-36 inches long.

I put batting in the middle - a flat type, so as not to be too bulky (W & N).
I also quilt - in the ditch or straight lines that criss-cross - simply because
it is easy and quick.

In your search engine - type in "FREE tablerunner quilt patterns" - you should
come up with a whole slew of 'em.

But, also go to QuiltersCache.com and check out Marcia Hohn's blocks - she has
hundreds and you can download instructions easily - and simply pick 3 blocks
you like. I think there's even a Christmas tablerunner there...

You didn't ask this - but since I love answering the unasked....
Just make sure you don't use any materials, whether thread, batting, or
fabric, that melts if a hot pot is put on it!!!!!!!!!!

Very good point. thank you for reminding me!!
I checked out quilter's cache for blocks. I'm going to use the Milky Way
block (will need 3 of them). It uses 3 shades but it will end up a scrappy
block in the 3 shades as I"m sure I don't have big enough scraps in 3
colours. Can't wait to get started now
