I may be just someone whose glass is always half full, but I have a feeling that this time you may be in for some time where there will be no more fighting, rockets, etc. and it might just be that all sides can finally prepare a base for a lasting peace. |

Ellice I watched in awe yesterday as people from all over the world, and every different walk in life filled the mall and stood there for hours in the freezing cold to cheer on our President Elect Obama. The outpouring of love was palpable and like you I truly believe this is going to heal not only our own country, but the nations of others. When Bono said Israel and Palestine tears streamed down my face and I had t his notion that the two nations would share that strip of land and come together and finally end the animosity and murdering of one another. I just have so much hope. A hope I don't think I ever felt before. We have an African American president. I can not believe it! Just amazing and wonderful. Victoria I must say, I was tearing up listening to Pete Seeger sing "This Land Is Your Land." Remembering what he went through in the 1950s with blacklisting, and yet he's persevered while the McCarthyites are gone. He's a shining example of speaking truth to power in so many instances. THAT really gives me hope that good will overcome darkness and a new day is coming. And what a great song/sentiment with which to end the concert. We have a couple of college kids - political science majors - staying with us (in Baltimore) so they can attend the Inauguration (and secondarily, scope out grad schools in DC). They're from Michigan, and they have tix from their Congressman for the Inauguration and a ball. It's great fun to experience it vicariously through their excitement! Excellent thought. We were watching the news from downtown, and after the re-run of the full MLK speech from 1963, there were news announcements that Israel is withdrawing its troops from Gaza. Let's all hope and pray as we prefer for peace and some understanding, resolution there, and all over. Ellice |

THAT really gives me hope that good will overcome darkness and a new day is coming. And what a great song/sentiment with which to end the concert. It does make you think. Took me years to really understand about why some of my grandfathers' friends seemed so interesting, and vocal for lack of a better term. But, there was a whole clutch of writers, musicians that had been blacklisted, and survived through. Made for some very interesting table conversations at their house (there was a very large table in the sunroom which was always full of people eating and drinking). My grandfather would get really excited about things. Earlier when we were watching the MLK festivities, DH & I were talking about what we remembered, being too young for much. I grew up in a very liberal, and pretty integrated household WRT friends, etc. I remember my mom yelling at my grandfather as he and my dad had taken me to a club in Harlem - in the 60s. But, he had lots of jazz musician friends, and well, that's how I grew up. It was a shock as a little kid in elementary school in Florida - the first time I ever saw separate drinking fountains. But, that ended right after we had moved. We have a couple of college kids - political science majors - staying with us (in Baltimore) so they can attend the Inauguration (and secondarily, scope out grad schools in DC). Sue Very true about the shared excitement. There are so many more balls this year, opportunities for many people to experience a gala. Funnily enough they were interviewing the owner of a shop in DC that caters to clientele for these - in a big size and price range. They've been quite busy - despite the local & national economy. It's certainly a fun thing to do once in a while. Ellice |

Sue -- Susan Hartman/Dirty Linen The Magazine of Folk and World Music www.dirtylinen.com We`re looking forward to watching the inauguration ceremony tomorrow. I am somewhat concerned about the huge emphasis which has been put on his colour though - that`s singularly unimportant, in my eyes, compared with the qualities he has as a human being. So far, so good, apparently! May it continue, to the benefit of us all. Pat |

Sue Yes, definitely during Pete Seeger for sure. The whole concert and all the pop icons and current day delivery was powerful. I feel like we are bringing politics into the 21st century and out of the stuffy backwater war mongering of this current administration. Victoria If anyone would like to see the concert, it's available online at http://www.hbo.com/weareone/ Definitely worth the view, IMHO. It was so extremely well organized - no "down" time between acts and aurally and visually interesting. I must say, starting the presidency with a music festival is a great beginning, in my book! VBG Sue ...and for me the absolutely best person to introduce President Obama, Bono Vox! Now that's cool. Sue, I really never felt this way before and everyone I know in my life feels the same way. My husband who is a political science major graduate who has read no less than 60 books on Bush and his failure is equally as thrilled and happy about this appointment. Just a wonderful time to be American, and to be alive. I hope this young country of ours can help the older nations to unite and come together as humanity evolves. Victoria http://gotbodhicitta-wangmo.blogspot.com/ Updated daily when able. Victoria, I really hope your optimism holds good. Personally, I have doubts, because of his total inexperience in many facets of governing, but I DO wish the new President well, and hope he has good advisers. No one man can make all the decisions needed, so his advisers are a number 1 priority. WE will see what happens, and I pray that nothing awful, like 9-11, hits him in his first year of office; that is nothing that any president, new or experienced has had to contend with, and hopefully will not recur. I may not have been a supporter of him, but as of tomorrow he IS MY PRESIDENT, and as such deserves support from the populace. Gillian |
