Default Death & Stashes

My DH&I were discussing wills and I wanted to know what you all plan to do
with your sewing stash after you pass. Thought of being buried with it, but
I don't think there's a hole big enough. Neither him nor my DD or extended
friends or family (that will be around after my demise) have any idea of the
value of the equipment, fabric, etc. What do other's plan to do?

i have a friend who did just that--after many years of being single, she
remarried a widower who came equipped with machines, tons of quilting books,
and a ready stash. she is doubly blessed!! (and i have a sneaking
suspicion that wife #1 is happy that the stuff is being put to good use.)
my friend has made several quilts for the "collective" family, so far, using
the stash. so, grandma #1 is sstill watching over the kids, indirectly!

admom

(and my daughters have already started staking claims on the stash--and i
have started sending it off to them, so they can enjoy it without my
demise!)

I saved this from a long time ago and it sounds reasonable to me.

Fabricholic's Will

Being of sound mind and body, I _____, do hereby record my last will and
testament, knowing that _______, my ________, (husband, sister,
daughter, etc.) has no appreciation of, or in some instances knowledge
of, my extensive fabric collection deposited throughout the house.

Knowing also that ____ has notified the local thrift store should I
precede him or her to the great fabric shop in the sky, to pick up and
dispose of the aforementioned collection.

Therefore, I do will this collection, and all collections related to it,
to my dear fabric preservationist _______. It is my wish that
______________, upon hearing of my death and obtaining clear proof that
I did not manage, although goodness know I tried, to take it with me,
would come to my home post haste, before the dumpster, search out my
collection which is similarly stored. That said collection should be
rescued and stacked in my quilting studio along with my sewing machines,
frames, old buttons, lace, patterns, quilts, dolls and works in progress.

And after this has been done that refreshments should be purchased for
my friends, not yet departed, which friends are also _________'s
friends, and every last one shall be in that room and they shall hold a
wake and say lovely and kind things about me until they run out and then
they shall divide amongst themselves, by lot, my wonderful collection.

I shall be hovering over that very spot until this is done. ___________
shall then quit this spot and close the door leaving the car, the house
and all the stocks and bonds and other worldly trivialities to those who
don't understand.

This is my wish in the matter.

Please don't burn my stash! Yes, bury me in the longboat - but with my
machines and fabric so that I can sew in the afterlife!
Actually, I am truly blessed with at daughters who are already eyeing my
stash for themselves....it will stay in the family and get loved the way it
should!

Viking burial: lengths to be used winding cloth. Wrap me up. Light my
fire, baby. Shove my longboat out to sea.
Leave the relatives to deal with any environmental-abuse charges.

I belong to our local chapter of ASG. Several people have willed their
fabric stashes to our chapter. We've either "auctioned" the stash off
to raise money for a cause or used it for various charitable projects.

You guys are waaaay too serious! Of course I won't burn the stash!
Some is to be willed directly, some to be given away before I croak,
some parceled out at a fabric wake, and the unclaimed bits donated to
charity.
Well, maybe one very nice piece used as a winding cloth; why not? I'l
need something to fondle in the Hereafter.

Some things are NOT funny i.e. burning the stash ;0)
I loved the will, I would not be adverse to my DH selling, but I will have
to explain the value, which may be safer post mortem. If he only knew.

Yes, Michelle, that is certainly an ugly threat for someone close to
you to make against your stash.
I, too, became concerned when H, who has made similar threats, showed
up with a long, very nice, shiny silver lighter. He hasn't smoked for
years, and we seldom ever BBQ outdoors, so I began to worry.
I went through the files to see if he had taken out a fire policy on
the house. I hid the lighter, and all of the matches, and then let him
know that I was on full alert for any such move.
On a serious note, inventorying your stash, and assigning it an
estimated value, perhaps adding an insurance rider to your policy, then
storing that info in a place other than your home, is an excellent idea
in case disaster strikes. Don't forget replacement value of machines and
other equipment. Photos or video recording your sewing room might be a
good idea, too.
