Cross Stitcher Magazine subscription question
I just received a telephone call from a company (Dial America
Marketing, telephone caller ID showed "Georgia Call" but she claimed to be calling from Nashville, TN) saying that they were calling on behalf of The Cross Stitcher magazine to renew my recently lapsed subscription. they had current and accurate information for me, including the date of my last subscribed issue, and they specifically said that they do not take payments over the telephone, only via invoice which will be mailed to me. They're offering a three-year subscription (18 issues) for $51.97, which is in itself a decent price, but I'm concerned about the veracity of this company and their involvement. I called Clapper Communications, who publishes the magazine, and left a voicemail message for Mary in subscriptions to ask her if this is in fact legitimate. I'd rather subscribe directly from Clapper to be sure that my information is received in the right place and that I get what I'm promised, but if they have in fact outsourced this aspect of their business, I'll go ahead and continue though this other marketing company. I'll post again once I've spoken with Mary (or someone else at Clapper) to discuss the situation. Dial America is a legit call center. I don't know if Clapper uses them
since I ditched that mag quite a while ago, but I wouldn't be surprised. If the caller already has your correct address, there really isn't any harm in having her send an invoice. Once you have the invoice you can check with Clapper to make certain the reply address (for sending payment) is accurate. Don't worry about the Nashville vs. Georgia issue with call centers. It is all run through trunk lines and who knows where those are registered. After I thought about it a bit more, I realized that since I'm registered on the National Do Not Call Registry, they must have gotten my information through a bona fide customer contact. I'll still follow up after my conversation with Clapper. Caller IDs often show strange things for whatever reason. My brother-in-law has a cell phone that shows up as "Santa Clari, CA" no matter where he's calling from, and he didn't get the phone in CA. Even stranger is the situation with my father, whose calls always show up as Atlanta, GA although he lives in CO. And he's not using a cell phone. -- Suze Cat hair? That's just an embellishment. I've just spoken with Liz at Clapper. She confirmed that Dial America
does in fact do business with them, specifically on recently lapsed subscriptions. She said that they have recently found out about other companies that are pulling magazine scams, promising one title and shipping something else, or licensed distributors subcontracting the magazine out and undercutting their prices, so she was glad that I called to make sure on this one.
