Default NYCO, WIP's, new things & a query

Hi there again, I've got several yarncraft things to discuss.
First NYCO, it's up to the bit where the back and fronts are joined together
at the top. Now I've got to work how to do the sleeves from the top down
when the pattern is written cuff up. However that's on the backburner for
the minute. DS is off snowboarding and "needs" another pair of knitted sock
(probably so he doesn't have to wash any!!) so I'm doing toe up, wrap
around toe, 2/2 rib instep in DK weight wool, with toe heel and possibly
some of cuff in different colour to make the yarn last!
I'm knitting the jumper my Mum started just before she died for her friend,
stocking stitch with reverse ss relief patterns and a cross over shawl type
neckline. Very 80's, the model on the pattern looks as if she's got shoulder
pads the size of small shopping bags tucked in there. Still chacun a son
gout, as they say.
I've started a Tunisian crochet blanket for my Dad out of just a very small
part of my Mum's stash, which has now added itself to mine, and DH really
can't moan, at least just for the time being. I'm making it in blocks,
shaped a bit like bricks and I plan to do it in a modular fashion as much as
poss. I REALLY do hate sewing up stuff.
Also in progress; 1 pair socks for SIL to be (foot 11 3/4 inches toe to
heel) and fingerless gloves with flapover top from Knitty.com for me
(obviously not for this winter.
Now for my query. I met a little girl the other day, although she'd argue
about being little, she's TEN after all. She has spina bifida, and has very
poor circulation in her feet, and what she needs is nice warm socks. I'd
really like to make her some quickly, and I 've got some yummy, girly bright
pink DK weight yarn. Tube socks would ideal 'cos they would be easy to do
without measuring her feet, which I can't do as these are a surprise. The
difficulty comes in that I'd like to crochet these sock 'cos it's quicker.
Anybody know of any free crochet tube sock patterns. I've googled with no
success, perhaps you'll have something hidden away. I know that I could
probably work out a pattern for myself, but I'm not feeling incredibly
inventive at the minute (throat's closing over, swallowing's like chewing
broken glass, neck hurts to touch, move, whatever, temp 39.8 C; all together
now AAAGH) Still I've got plenty to keep me occupied while I recover!!!
And Noreen's scarf is just right for keeping neck tucked in and comfy-ish.
Thanks again Noreen.
Thanks

Christine,
Would the above pattern work if you used worsted or bulky yarn & a larger hook?
I'm not at ALL a crocheter, but found this one in a search....
Good luck,
Karen G.

Christine, first let me offer my sympathy for the passing of your mother.

As for crochet tube socks, I think the easiest thing to do would be to chain
the length you want from top to toe, then work sc in back loop only (except the
first and last stitch of each row -- work those sc through both loops), however
many rows you need to go around the foot/leg. Join the last row to the
beginning row to form the tube. Then either gather one end for the toe, or sc
around the toe-end of the tube, decreasing evenly to form the toe. The "sc in
back loop only" has plenty of stretch to it (so size doesn't need to be exact),
and is bulky enough to be warm.

Hope that helps some,

Still stitchin' and smilin'

Thank you all fro your suggestions, and extra thanks for the hug, Katherine,
throat feels better just getting that. I think it's Paracetamol, lots of
fluids and taking it gently for a couple of days

AAAGH's coming from Tennessee too, Christine!. I THINK either Julie or
Kelly posted a link to tube sox, but my brain is a tad fuzzy today!
Glad the scarf is keeping you warm... BTW, it IS machine washable and
dryable, just use gentle and low heat.
You're VERY welcome!
Hugs,
Noreen

Hi Christine,

For an easy and I think quick two needle sock try the spiral sock pattern on
Sue CD's website. There is no particular heel so you can make them like a tube.
I have to agree with you about sewing things together, that's why I do a
continuous granny square.
Hope you are feeling better.

Hugs,

Nora

Thanks Nora, feeling considerably better, but your post only just showed up!
I actually crocheted a cute pair of bright pink imitation rib tube socks
from a link someone posted, can't remember who,but thanks whoever you are,
they're great! I'll try the knit ones another time.
