Default Ultrasonic Cleaner HELP

Hello all,

Can anyone recomend a good sonic cleaner? I currently own a sonic
cleaner I bought from Gesswein. I am a long standing customer of Gesswein
but I am very unhappy with the cleaner. It's a Gesswein/Elma Ultrasonic
Cleaner LC30H an it just doesn't seem to do a good enough job.

Any recommendations would be much appreciated,

Jay

Call Gesswein, and ask to talk to Elaine Corwin, their V.P. for product design
(well, I don't recall her exact title, but something like that.) Elaine is a
highly knowlegeable person in matters of products and their qualities, and
should be able to help you work this out. Gesswein is pretty good about taking
care of their customers, and backing their products.

Note that the Elmas gemerally have a very good reputation. However, also note
that in general, the smaller ultrasonics from any manufacturer are often likely
to be lower powered than the bigger units. If you want a more powerful unit,
consider those where the power generator is a seperate box from the tank. The
larger Bransonics for example. Elma machines, as well as "healthsonics", are
often also sold under other, private labels, such as "ottosonic" from Frei and
Borel, something you'd not see if they weren't considered good quality. But
smaller unites, especially those without heaters, simply are intended to be
gentler lower powered machines, and can be expected to take longer to do a job.
One tradeoff, though, is that with lower powers, they don't as often damage
things. The higher powered machines are quite capable of damaging the polish on
softer metals like cast sterling silver, where any porosity in the silver shows
up as white frosty streaks after even a short time in the ultrasonic.

You can easily test any decent ultrasonic to be sure it is indeed working. Fill
with plain water and the usual operating temp, and hold a piece of standard
weight aluminum foil, vertically, in the tank almost to the bottom, along the
diagonal corner to corner direction in the tank. Examine it after, say, 30
seconds to a minute in the machine. It should be punched through with lots of
tiny pinholes fairly evenly distributed over the surface. If you don't see
that, then it's possible your unit is indeed not working, ie burned out
transducers or transducers that have become detached from the tank, or the like.

Hope that helps

Peter

vj found this in rec.crafts.jewelry, from "Jay C. Canale"

just out of curiosity, could it be the cleaning solution and not the
cleaner itself?
