How long is a foot?
Hi All,
I'm knitting a pair of socks as a gift for a slender 6 foot tall woman. I don't know how long her foot is and I can't measure her foot or her forearm as she lives quite far from me. I don't want her to know about this gift, so I figured I'd make it about size 8 or 8.5. US. Would anyone out there know how long that is in inches? Any opinions about that size? Think it's too big, small, or right? Any help would be very appreciated! Thanks, Hesira PS: I tried Googling this, and you don't want to know what I came up with! |

Unless she's a very small-footed person for her height that sock will be too short. I'm 5'7" and I wear a .eu42 shoe. That's something bigger than a women's US10, but not much. My foot is 10.375" long from the back of the heel to the tip of the longest toe when I'm standing. I knit most of my socks to an unwashed length of about 9", sometimes a bit more; they shrink/bloom a bit on the first wash and fit perfectly thereafter. So I have to vote for socks that are at least 9.5" FINISHED SCOURED length for a woman of 6' in height. The gals of my acquaintance with that stature tend to have larger feet than me. +++++++++++++ Reply to the list as I do not publish an email address to USENET. This practice has cut my spam by more than 95%. Of course, I did have to abandon a perfectly good email account... |

Hmm -- I am also 5'7" and I wear a US woman's 8.5 or Eur 39. My
daughter is 5' 10.5" and wears a US woman's 7.5 shoe. So -- I guess I would caution relying too much on height as an indicator although I think my daughter's small feet are unusual (not for her as she takes after her father whose sock size is just slightly longer than mine though he is 6 ft tall.) My SIL who is about 5 ft 11 inches tall does wear a US woman's 10 shoe - and I make her socks longer than the ones I make for my DH. (They are brother and sister - but built differently. We humans are marvelously varied individuals.) Unless she's a very small-footed person for her height that sock will be too short. I'm 5'7" and I wear a .eu42 shoe. |

How long is a foot?
I am only 5 foot tall but my foot measures 10 inches in length.
During WW11 I got extra clothing coupons for shoes as a child because of my long feet. My Dad used to say I would be a tall girl if I had not got so much tucked under at the bottom. Another saying of his was that it was not the shoes but the boxes they came in that I needed.# Now my sister only took a size 4 but I have a 6 Uk sizes. So it is difficult for you to judge her size. How long is a foot?
I agree with Wooly. Having shopped with my DD#1 who is 5'11", I think that
the length should be at least 9.5 inches. Height is not always an indicator of shoe size but the shoes in tall catalogs tend to run larger than you can find anywhere else. Absolutely, but it does seem to be a general operating rule that taller people will have bigger feet - they need more real estate on the ground in order to stay upright during a brisk breeze +++++++++++++ Reply to the list as I do not publish an email address to USENET. Hi Wooly,
Pardon my ingnorance, but what do you mean by SCOURED? I've seen you post it before, and wondered. In article .com,
hesira wrote: Hi All, I'm knitting a pair of socks as a gift for a slender 6 foot tall woman. I don't know how long her foot is and I can't measure her foot or her forearm I see you know that trick, then. Can you find someone about the same height and slenderness to measure? I figured I'd make it about size 8 or 8.5. US. Would anyone out there know how long that is in inches? Any opinions about that size? Think it's too big, small, or right? Any help would be very appreciated! The Yarn Harlot's new book, _Knitting Rules_ page 140 says that a women's medium shoe size is usually 10 inches, a women's large shoe size is usually 11 inches long. She also says that foot size is usually 15% of their height. (I've met a short woman with very long narrow feet, so the "usually" is important.) =Tamar |
