First of all let me admit that I know nothing about jewelry whatsoever! I recently found my high school graduation ring, which my parents paid around $300 for in '92. I of course wore it for maybe 3 months then threw it in with some keepsakes. Huge waste of money. Anyway, what would be the worth of this ring now, just guesstimating? It's a Balfour, has "10k" inscribe on the inner ring which I suppose means 10-karat gold. Should I just try different pawn shops? Take it to a real jewelry store? TIA for any answers. Trevor It's worth it's value in scrap gold, which is somewhere between 25 cents and 50 cents on the dollar, depending on who is buying it from you. Abrasha http://www.abrasha.com |

Abrasha http://www.abrasha.com You actually have one other chance to get more for it, but it's a long-shot. You can try and see if anyone from that school has LOST a ring or wants a replacement for their class ring. Most of the manufacturers don't retain their class ring molds for a lot of years -- so reording more than 10 years after the fact may not be possible (varies by mfr). SO... you could try running an eBay ad or listing it on classmates.com (subscription service - be warned) for your high school's class... or put an ad in your alumni newsletter. Otherwise, the other advice you got is right on the money -- scrap value only. BUT if you hold onto it, you may find that it takes on more significance in your life as you grow older. Mine sure means a lot more to me now than it did 10 years after graduation. Good luck, KG |

I replaced my ring a couple of years after graduation and then wore if for a
couple of years. After a while I had other jewlery and quit wearing it. Then my kids got to be 7th, 8th, and 9th grade. Fortunately my daughters school did the order for the rings in 9th grade and I was reminded that I had planned on getting their rings much earlier than 11th grade so they could wear them longer. We ordered hers imediately from a jewlery store and while she waited on hers she wore mine. She was thrilled. I worried a little about her losing it. I knew that adjusting to a ring the first time involves lots of taking it off and fiddling with it. In many ways I would have rather that she lost mine than her new one. The next year my son was a seventh grader and he wanted his ring right away he had very good grades and we rewarded him by ordering the ring. And like his sister he wanted to wear mine. It has been a couple of years and I can't remember if he wore it on a chain or his little finger. But he was just as thrilled. Now it is time for the baby to get her chance. I guess now that the other kids have worn it maybe I'd be a little more upset if she lost it, but it is too cool of a tradition to stop now. Also for anyone ordering class rings price several jewelery stores, they are usually a lot cheaper then the school. Believe it or not the schools usually get a markup on the rings.
