Default OT - advice for UK folks who order fabric from online places in the US

Hiya folks,
Just received a parcel of 18 yards of fabric in a box. It sounds
innocuous until you look at what they charged for shipping. This
added to the total of the package, which then attracted the attention
of customs and I paid £22.62 to receive the package.
My word of advice: if possible, get the place to break a large
order into smaller global priority envelops. You can get up to 9 or
so yards into one of the $9 mailer, and that makes each parcel's value
lower - you will most likely not get nailed for customs, and these
envelops can get smooshed into your mailslot unlike a large box that
has to be taken back to the depot.
Note of caution over! Back to sewing ....

Sorry you got dinged Johanna. When didn't have free trade with the US I got
dinged for quilting supplies, books were exempt, yup you guessed it, my
supplies were books. Too much of a hassle to straighten it out, I just
paid.
Enjoy your fabric.
