Mexican Food in New England
in San Jose, in some of the neighborhoods, there's a person who goes around
with a pot of them. I forget how much they are, but it's somewhere in the range of a buck apiece. I know, also, when I went to the county fair, there was a couple across the street selling them, also. think shredded chicken (pork, beef) in a cornbread "shell", plenty juicy. More complicated than that, but it's like saying clams and potatoes in a white sauce. mary -- ____________________________________ Cyberpunk Tournament @ Gamer's Keepe 31 July 20041 2pm Vacaville, CA constructed deck format - $5 www.gamerskeepe.com "starlia" wrote in message ... I love Boston clam chowder and yes I only like the white kind. Who puts tomatoes in chowder? Tamales are one of my favorite foods. I could eat them all the time if I could get away with it. They are just very time consuming to make. Most Mexican families I know make a whole production out of tamale day. Usually the whole family gets into the groove of tamale day and they sell them in the local markets here. Yummy stuff. -- Starlia Klopman www.klopmanstudios.com "Kathy N-V" wrote in message . giganews.com... I'm in Boston, not exactly the world capital for Mexican food. Heck, we started getting tortillas in the supermarket less than 5 years ago, and we still don't get those humongous packs like I see in west coast stores. I've seen a few "Taco Bell" stores, but the commercials have such unappetizing views of the food that I would never go there. I can get burritos from the Burrito dude in Downtown Crossing, but that's about it. We have a "Fajita's and 'Ritas" restaurant downtown, but they don't serve tamales, as far as I can determine. Our one "authentic" Mexican restaurant serves mostly seafood: squiddly kinds of things, and I can't drag Bob in there. You can have all the jelly grass drink that you'd like, in whatever flavors you can imagine (but it still has jelly grass in it - ew). My tolerance for it stopped at less than one, but to each her own. Same for Baccala - ewww. Portuguese Sweet Bread, anyone? (All can be found at most supermarkets, and aren't considered weird food) Do you guys have Boston Brown Bread (cooked in the can)? How many varieties of chowder are available at any restaurant or market in your area? (Not that abomination with tomatoes that is served by Yankees fans. True chowder is pretty much white) When you order fried clams, does the server ask "with or without?" (and do you know the answer?) So, it's not entirely weird that I've never had a tamale. Are they good? Kathy N-V (who bets most of you have never had knoedel, either) |

People who come here always want to "go to Fisherman's Wharf [in San Francisco] and have some o'that chowder!" What th---?? I tell them chowder is traditionally an east coast food. Ya goobers! We have CRAB here. Okay? Get it straight. And gobs of seafood. And the best sourdough bread in creation. Plus we have a world-famous area called The Gourmet Ghetto. Chowder? I love chowder, but that isn't what it's about here. They're confused. But we have some of the BEST food in the world. You get terribly spoiled with the food here. pinto beans and cornbread. with the beans cooked til they are almost
mushy...with hamhocks! My mom's main meals were "beans, potatoes, and meat". Beans being pinto. Potatoes and meat different variance. Sometimes ham, mashed potatoes, white gravy, and pork'n'beans... on occasion squirrel and dumplings or dove. mary -- ____________________________________ Cyberpunk Tournament @ Gamer's Keepe 31 July 20041 2pm Vacaville, CA constructed deck format - $5 www.gamerskeepe.com "Carlinda" wrote in message nk.net... Aw, come on, Sooz! Oyster chowder? Geoduc chowder? We have the best! Well sure! But that's not the thing. We're the crabs-and-sourdough capital. It cracks me up when someone from Missouri comes here for the chowder. ~~ Sooz |

now *that* i wouldn't buy. From a store, maybe. but not door-to-door. No
telling how long it's been out of a fridge, even if it's in a refrigerated truck. Unless I knew people who vouched for them... mary -- ____________________________________ Cyberpunk Tournament @ Gamer's Keepe 31 July 20041 2pm Vacaville, CA constructed deck format - $5 www.gamerskeepe.com "Diana Curtis" wrote in message ... Not sure about "soup beans" but I'd kill for some black-eyed peas (or field
peas WITH the snaps) and cornbread. mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Kathy K "Carlinda" wrote in message nk.net... So, anybody care for some "soup beans and cornbread"??? Really good eatin' in those pots of beans! I have now experience the Tamale sales! Today a woman came by the gallery
selling Tamales. As an east coaster, like Kathy N-V, I had never experienced a door to door hot food sales pitch. Of course after the recent discussion here it made it even funnier. Kathy K |

Kathy K "Jalynne" wrote in message link.net... oh SHUT UP. We had some like this when we visited Victoria, BC two years ago. Now I must go get a kitchen torch. Actually, I've been wanting one for quite some time, but my kitchen was too cluttered. Now i have room for it.
