Hey, aren't we in the same sort of area? I'm in Cardiff, NSW. -- Melinda http://cust.idl.com.au/athol I'll be in that! I live in Newcastle -- Cooks Hill to be exact. Moved here a year ago and never want to leave. It's so great being able to *afford* to live within walking distance of a great beach. Liz G'day Liz! Me Dad was born in Cooks Hill (Parry Street) and worked there much of his life. Which beach do you like best? We used to prefer N'cle South, only it's too hard to get there now that they've closed the road. Rats! Fancy there being *three* Novocastrians here at rcts! ;-D -- Trish {|:-} Newcastle, NSW, Australia |

I love being able to just wander down to the beach when I feel like it, rather than having to make an "outing" of it. I also like being within walking/cycling distance of Spotlight. I've been doing so much more sewing since I discovered it. But I do occasionally miss the more glamorous fabric shops in Sydney -- fortunately I have to go to Sydney fairly often anyway :-) Liz |

I'd love to see if there's a branch of Dainty's out there... ;D A lot of the towns/suburbs around this area are named after UK cities, etc. Newcastle Aust is a sister city with Newcastle-Upon-Tyne. If we had the space (probably some day...) you'd be welcome anytime, Kate, although I don't think we have one of those here. -- Melinda http://cust.idl.com.au/athol |

There used to be a stupendous one in Chatswood and I often made expeditions there to get neat stuff like a whole entire bolt of calico at 90c a metre! I think it had much better quality fabric than Spotlight overall, but the Chatswood HY is gone and I've no idea whether the chain still exists. There used to be a Lincraft at Charlestown and it was worth visiting, again because of slightly superior quality fabrics. There's a little fabric shop in Wallsend called 'Contra Designs' - they try hard to have a good selection, but lack of custom (hardly anyone sews, it seems!!!!) is not helping. McElwaine's at Kotara is *supposed* to have rather better stuff (they specialise in bridal and fabrics for formal wear), but I've found the taste of the management doesn't coincide with my own. Do you have any recommendations for shops in Sydney? I'd love to find a place that sells cotton knits in a variety of prints instead of the predictable selection that Spotlight carries! -- Trish {|:-} Newcastle, NSW, Australia |

Trish,
HY still exists - in the city, corner of York and Market Street (Town Hall is the nearest train station), and full of fabric, and there is Lincraft next to it (Imperial Arcade on the Pitt St Mall) and The Silk Shop in the Piccadilly Arcade (next block of Pitt St towards the Town Hall station). So, be prepared (credit card wise)! Cheers Tatiana "Trish Brown" wrote in message ... I think they specialise in "designer" fabrics, and they're not cheap. I don't think they have a lot of knits though. I've only started sewing knits since my DH bought me a new sewing machine for Christmas. Liz |
