Default Singer 401a problem

I have a Singer 401a. The needle keeps hitting the back of the throat
plate. Is there a way to move the needle assembly forward to center
the needle in the throat plate? Thanks for your help.

My old White was doing something similar about 5 years back, except it was
hitting the front plate. I used that as an excuse to buy my new one (Janome),
had the old one serviced, and it turned out it was a timing problem. Could
only have been fixed by the repairman. BTW it now "runs like a sewing
machine", and I keep it as a backup.

Before you do anything else, change the needle to see if you had a bent
needle in the machine. And whatever you do, don't let a mechanic talk
you into getting rid of that machine. It will sew circles around most
of the low-end machines these days and will run for your lifetime and
beyond if you take care of it.

I agree completely. I have a 401G and plan to have it for the rest of my
life (about 30 more years, probably).

You have HOW many Singers? Sounds like you could start your own museum!

Have you used this machine before without any problems?

Check to make sure the needle is in correctly, and that the needle is
new (and straight). Otherwise it's a needle rod adjustment, and unless
you know how to do this type of repair yourself, you would need to take
it to a SM repair shop.

Whatever you do, don't get rid of it or let anyone talk you into getting
a new one :-) It is the BEST zig zag model Singer ever made. I use the
401 constantly (I have two) and it is hands down my favorite (and I have
30+ vintage Singers). I wouldn't trade the 401 for anything.
