Default Casting on in the middle?

Hi all,
I'm still hard at work, experimenting with various aspects of making
doll clothes for my SIL's Madame Alexander dolls. I'm working on a
cute little lavender sundress, sleeveless, with an off-the-shoulder
ribbed neckline. The piece is knit from the top down.

I fudged my way through a directive but would like to know the correct
way to do it for next time: I had to cast on some stitches in the
middle of the piece for the bottom part of the armholes, so I was
working sort of in thin air. What is the correct way of casting on to
bridge a gap like this?

I'll be up north of here this weekend staying with friends while I go
to the Wool Festival, and they don't have a working computer, so I'll
have to try to be patient and read any kind answers upon my return
home on Sunday. Thanks everyone! You have so much collective
experience, this is a wonderful forum to be part of.

Look at this page -
http://www.knittinghelp.com/knitting...ques/index.php - for
some cast on techniques. Knitted, cable or the backwark loop are all
good for in the middle casting on.
