OT Taking a break from beading

After beading for months and months in preparation for a craft show next
month, I took a break from beading last night to go see Barry Manilow in
concert.

Colette went with me (under duress) and surprised herself by enjoying the
man and his music.

From the show opener until the last notes were sung, Barry sang his heart
out, giving his South Florida fans his very best. He always brings a fan up
from the audience to sing "Can't Smile Without You" and last night,
5-year-old Amanda surprised him by not only knowing all the words, but
singing on key and with gusto. She won the hearts of all the Manilow fans
there.

His backup singers were a show on their own, and when Barry and his singers
did a vocal version of the 1812 Overture with only their voices as the
instruments, the crowd went crazy.

Although it seems Barry is another victim of bad plastic surgery (I think he
and Roger Daltrey went to the same guy), his awesome voice has not changed.
Four huge televisions focused on his face throughout the show, and caught
the tears on his cheeks as he sang "Somewhere Down the Road".

Filled not only with songs and videos from his early days (his debut on the
Mac Davis Show a long long time ago, when he looked like Shaun Cassidy), but
anecdotes, and jokes, it was a wonderful four hours of music and love. If
you get the chance to see his final tour, don't miss it. You will not be
sorry.

That sounds fab. He may be seen as a sort of cheesy musician, but he's always
struck me as the nicest guy (and talented). And he's had his fingers in a lot
of musical pies, from McDonald's jingles to playing piano for Bette Midler in
the Baths, so I bet his stories were fascinating.

You know, I've always liked his sappy music. It just doesn't play well in
the repetitive media. I know several people who were just wild about
Liberace, too. Some people have a gift for entertaining that transcends
their music and their image.

One of the cool things about going to the shows in Casinos (especially in
smaller room like in Tahoe) is that the whole audience partakes. I'm
spoiled; I can't imagine going to some coliseum and being just another
packed in body at a concert.

country music!!

I'm quite enjoying it! And, the nice thing is that the lyrics are mostly so
wholesome that my dd and I can sing along and I don't have much to explain.
'Course, she's a parrothead who always wonders why we fast forward over the
song "Let's Get Drunk", but I guess that won't last forever!

I love this guy...sigh. My favorite commercial jingle he ever wrote was the one for
Band-Aid. Imagine, if you will, a 4 year old singing at the top of her lungs all the

Hey now, I like country music too as long as it isn't old school. I can't
stand Hank Sr. but I love Jr. I'm listening to Kenny Roger's greatest hits

If you want some really good bluegrass, try finding an album by Sam Bush,
one of the best mandolin players in the world. He used to play at several
bluegrass bars in Louisville way back when, with New Grass Revival. I
remember one night this kid was singing too, some guy called Ricky Scaggs.
Not bad, wonder what ever happened to him?

It was great back then, we drank everything out of Mason's jars. One of the
bars was even called that.

I don't care for lots of country but I do love bluegrass. Sadly, Mike's a
big country fan, even though he's never even ridden a horse or worn cowboy
boots. However, I have made him a Parrot Head so that's alright.

Yeah, he did bits of his jingles - Band-Aid, State Farm, McDonalds, Dr.
Pepper. He also tells of two that never got bought - "Hoover really sucks"
And "Shove it up your nose" (Vicks inhaler).

I"ve been a fanilow of Manilow for a long time.

My adopted daughter and I love him. We always go see him when he comes to
St. Louis.
He can't quit, we still love his music!

i have a murder mystery wherein the main character is a "Barry Manilow
impersonator" whose band does clubs and parties. all the Manilow
stuff in it was a trip!
