The facts here have been disguised to protect the innocent (not that I know
anybody all that innocent). An elderly friend of ours is paying $ 800 per
month for her medications. There are no generic substitutes and her
miserable tight-wad prescription insurance company won't pay a dime to help
her.
She doesn't 'do' internet and can't research. I just can't help but
wonder if she might be able to get her prescriptions through Canada.
Forking over $800 a month isn't forcing her to live in the city park in a
Boy Scout tent or have to serve Spam for Easter Dinner. It just strikes me
that this is simply not right.
She's not a quilter needing FQs but I would love to help her save some
$s for bingo down at the VFW every Thursday night.
Please tell us about friends of yours that get their medicine from
Canada. No personal experiences, please. Big Brother is watching you
instead of the border. Polly

Does she not have access to Medicare? If so, she should also be
eligible for the Rx part -- and it should pay some of her drug costs.
I can't imagine anyone who is elderly and has no help at all paying
for prescriptions.

I have a friend who get her meds from Canada and she can get them cheaper
than she could get them in Florida. She did not sign up for the "new" thing
with Medicare to get her drugs. She says she saves money doing this. ALSO,
in Florida there is a place to get Drugs From Canada (might not be the exact
name) it is a store in a small shopping center that is lots smaller than a
regular drug store. Also, if there is a WalMart fairly close by, she might
be able to get meds at a lot cheaper price there. A cholesterol med I get
there for $12 for 3 months cost $89 at CVS Pharmacy. Publix Grocery Stores
has Diabetic Meds for FREE. This is for generic meds.

If your friend let her doctor know the cost of her present drugs, he could
write her perscription for the drug that was used before her current drug
was formulated, and write so she can get generic.

Polly, do you have type of state lottery where your friend is? I know
in most states that have them, some of that $$ goes to help the
state's senior citizens. I know in at least Maryland and CT there are
prescription programs available from the state that are separate from
Medicare. Sorry I have no specifics to guide your friend, but if you
check the phone book under the government listings for 'senior
services' or some variant, you might get somewhere. The people I know
of in those 2 states found their relief pre 'internet' days and all
contact was done via phone. Might be a long, tedious process but
could well be worth the effort. Even if there is no lottery to fund
such programs, there may still be programs available that are not
advertised. Hope this helps as I know nothing about Canadian drugs.

There are programs with the various 'medication' manufacturers for people to
get free meds. Before I had prescription coverage I was on one plan and
their income guidelines were quite generous. It sure can't hurt to do some
internet research and check each manufacturer's website for info and an
application for a free medication plan.

Best of luck in finding a solution for your friend.

I don't know about getting prescriptions from Canada but she may be able to
get help from the pharmaceutical companies that make her meds. I know
AstraZeneca has a prescription assistance program for people who qualify.
You can get details on their website.
http://www.astrazeneca-us.com/help-a...your-medicines

I don't know if other companies have something similar but it might be worth
checking into it for her.
I hope she finds some way to help with the cost. $800/month is ridiculous!

In years past I got my drugs from Canada as Wisconsin encouraged us to
do it...so much cheaper, about 1/3rd the cost of them in the USA. I
used Canadadrug.com. CanadaRX is another good one. You have to fax
your prescription to them or have your Dr. do it. The turn around
time is fast, maybe a week. Costco is the the cheapest in the USA and
then Walmart and Target.

What I don't understand is why she isn't on the Medicare RX plan.
Maybe you could find a senior advocacy person to help her get signed
up for this at a local senior center. Most states also have a senior
ombudsman to help seniors with stuff like this. Ours is listed in the
state govt. website. Also, you might want to check the Social
Security website for numbers to call for similar help. I know it's
out there, you just have to find it! A call to a hospital social
worker might get you headed in the right direction of where to look.

she might also contact the company that makes the
medications.
If she qualifies, she can get them for zero dollors. It's
worth
a try.

The problem with insurance programs, including the Medicare prescription
drug coverage (which is actually provided by various insurance
companies), is that each company has its own formulary which lists the
drugs they will cover. It's one of the things you should look at when
buying prescription drug coverage. If you are eligible for Medicare part
D (the prescription drug coverage), you can use the medicare web site
http://www.medicare.gov/Default.aspx?AspxAutoDetectCookieSupport=1 to
help you find a company that covers the drugs you use. Unfortunately,
you only change your Medicare part D and Medicare supplement during a
limited enrollment time each year. Also, the companies are allowed to
change their formularies during the year, so that what was covered at
enrollment time may not be covered later in the year.
