We got home around noon, had lunch, and all took naps (except for
Thomas who doesn't nap...ever). She is doing well, no pins, but a 3/4
plaster splint/cast wrapped in gauze, wrapped in an ace bandage,
wrapped in surgical tape.

We had a fight going under the gas - fortunately, she only hurt me,
not any of the nurses (I was draped over her legs, holding her hands
and talking to her...it took 2 nurses holding her head still for her
to get the gas). The first time she had to have gas, she managed to
kick a nurse practically across the room, so the other times (broken
nose and nor arm) I go in and hold her to protect the nurses since
they haven't done anything to deserve getting hurt by her. Had to
fight with the anesthesiologist (not one that we've seen before) and
basically said if he didn't let me go back, we'd wait for the other
anesthesiologist who knows us (he also was there for Ken's shoulder
surgery) and who let me go back with her.

She fought coming out of the gas as well - screaming at Ken and
demanding to be allowed to go home, then crying that it hurt too much
and the doctors and nurses were mean bone breakers who had hurt her.
We tag teamed and she tried the same with me. I reminded her that SHE
broke her own arm..not once, but twice...and that all the doctor did
was put it back the way it belonged. She kept demanding to be allowed
to leave and I kept reminding her that we needed to wait until her
pain level was done, pulse ox was normal, temp was normal....she got
sucked into watching scooby doo on the little tv each area has. Got
her to take some juice, tylenol 3, graham crackers, and a few bites of
an ice pop.

She kept falling back to sleep and I told her she needed to wake up if
she wanted to go home and the nurse actually had the audacity to tell
me to let her rest - I pointed out we had been there since 8am, she
had no right to yell at us as if WE broke her arm, and having been at
this particular rodeo several times before, I know how they operate.
I will say this was the WORST nurse we have ever had to deal with at
outpatient surgery/recovery...obnoxious, rude, ignored us when we had
questions (like when Bek said her arm felt hot...warning bells for mom
until they explained it was part of the drying process for the
plaster). I honestly think this was the same nurse that made the
snarky comments when Ken had his shoulder surgery and I helped him get
his socks and shoes on...whatever....

So, Bek started waking up a bit, I was able to get her dressed (found
some loose tops for her since she has a HUGE right arm now), and we
chatted a bit. Took forever for the nurse to get the release papers
to us and she basically ordered me to leave my daughter and go get the
car....Ken went back to recovery when I got the car..no way was I
leaving a 7yo to the tender mercies of Nurse Ratched!

So...Bek and Tom are watching tv right now, dinner is cooking, we are
all kind of tired. Not sure how we are going to get her set up for
bed tonight...when she napped with me, we had a pillow under her head
and one on either side of her to keep her from rolling....but those
were Ken's pillows...need to see if we have any more extra pillows
hidden around here....

Night all...going offline at least until tomorrow night once I've
gotten caught up on my sleep

Wish I could pop over with spare pillows... We must have about 20 in
the house!

Sounds like Bek has a full-blown panic attack when she has to be
subjected to this sort of thing. My sister used to do much the same as
a kid when having injections. Shame they don't use those nice dozy
pre-op things any more... Poor kid. Give her my love, and tell her the
better behaved she is, the faster it'll heal. Dunno how much truth
there is in that, but it's worth a try! It's what my granny used to
tell us.

We propped her up with the longish throw pillows from the couch on
either side of her, plus the regular pillow under her head. She did
fine until just before 5am when she woke me up because her arm was
hurting. I gave her some T3 and we both went back to bed. Apparently
she had gotten up earlier to get a new ice pack and that kind of
messed me up a bit (gate at top of stairs was open). I spent the
morning doing yard work, but Ken said she stayed down and was watching
tv with her brother. She had been invited to a birthday party so I
took her on the condition that if she was in pain, we were leaving
(yes, I can tell when she's hurting even if she says she isn't). No
T3 tonight, so I guess she's not in too much pain. She is also taking
a homeopathic remedy to help promote bone healing, and we are keeping
our fingers crossed that it does what it says it will do. I suppose
we'll see how it is going on the 27th when we see the doctor again and
have new xrays taken. We did book and pay the deposit for her
birthday - doing build-a-bear at Michael's crafts the day before her
actual birthday. She was upset that we weren't doing a huge thing at
home until I pointed out that: she'll have the party with friends on
the first, the party with family on her actual birthday, and then
cupcakes with her classmates in school on Monday.....yeah, 3 days of
celebration for her....sheesh....kids, gotta love them.

What I think is good is that she has less mobility in the plaster
splint than she did in the cast, so she can't actually wiggle this
time. Finger's crossed, though it's going to be hard to keep them
that way for another week...lol. We solved the coat dilemma by
finding a poncho and fingerless glove pattern tonight, and she picked
out the fleece she wanted. It was a little big until I did some
adjusting (as in falling off her shoulders and everything). She loves
it, and it will keep her warm now that the mornings are starting to be
chilly. Fingerless gloves might have to wait a bit longer as the
first one didn't go all the way over the splint and all it's wrappings.

I'm not a believer in homeopathy, but anything that helps has to be
good, so the best of luck with it. Chamomile tea might also be beneficial.

Don't I know it! The GMNT did really well in his exams, so as a prezzy
for that he's getting some 'design them yourself' Nike trainers, and
then his birthday is on the 1st October...

We ended up immobilizing a WHOLE CAT for three months after it shed
several plaster casts on a pair of busted metatarsals in the off hind
leg... Had to keep him in a small cage and only let him out for cuddles
in the evening, not letting him walk on it at all. He has made a full
recovery, but is still known at the vets as 'the stupid cat that broke
its leg in its sleep!' Keeping Beks still enough for the arm to heal
sounds like it could be a similar containment operation... The
poncho sounds great. For hands, what about a muff? The elastic could
be made quite slack on one side.

Lots of people aren't, and that's ok. I have only given her one dose
today and won't be giving her any more until I see how things play
out. When I helped her get dressed this morning, I barely touched her
thumb and her eyes teared right up. I took a good look and noticed
that her thumb and all fingers were swollen...her little bitty thumb
was almost the size of MY thumb!! On-call doc said to elevate it
above her heart for a couple of hours and swelling should go down a
bit. HOWEVER, swelling is a normal thing, so we need to watch the
color of the fingers and do the pinch test - pinch a finger and if it
turns white, then goes right back to pink, it's ok. She may very well
have to sleep on the couch tonight to keep her from moving all over
the place while sleeping....right now, she's only allowed to get up to
use the bathroom and then she has to wear her sling. it's a bit nerve-
wracking, and I will be calling the doctor's office in the morning.
We aren't sure about her returning to school tomorrow and I will check
with the school nurse to see what she thinks.

If all is well, I will be taking them both to school as usual, but
will also be picking them up after school to avoid her getting bumped
on the bus - the 2 schools are right next to each other, so it just
makes sense to me to swing by the middle school and grab Thomas
instead of having to deal with the daily bus craziness. After this
week, we will return to the normal routine....I hope. Oh, and
Wednesday, I get to be an instructor for other parents - teaching them
how to do the first grade take-home reading books....the RIGHT way,
emphasizing the need for them to be there when they are scheduled,
checking to make sure the level of book matches the level each child
is on, etc...should be fun....lol
